Cubs blank slumping Giants 7-0 (AP)

SAN FRANCISCO ? Randy Wells didn't get very far after throwing his first career complete game. The Chicago Cubs right-hander was nailed in the face by a shaving cream pie.

It wasn't the way Wells planned to celebrate his birthday, but after holding the defending World Series champion San Francisco Giants to just two hits, no one complained.

Wells matched his season high of seven strikeouts and allowed only two runners to reach second base, and the Cubs backed him with four home runs ? including three off San Francisco ace Tim Lincecum ? in a 7-0 rout of the Giants on Monday night.

"The last time I got shaving cream in the face was (my) first win, so it was pretty fun," said Wells, who has won four straight decisions. "It was pretty cool. I came close last year in St. Louis but I got lifted in the ninth. It was very special for me to beat a Cy Young Award guy."

Wells (6-4) faced only four batters over the minimum and walked one while winning his third consecutive start on the road. Wells, who hasn't lost since July 28, improved to 2-1 in four career starts against the Giants.

San Francisco managed only a two-out double by Andres Torres in the third and Mike Fontenot's pinch-hit single with one out in the eighth.

That continues to be a big problem for the Giants, who went into August with a two-game lead in the division. Now San Francisco needs a strong finish to avoid missing out on the postseason altogether.

The Giants are five games behind the first-place Diamondbacks with 27 games to play. At the same point a year ago, they were three games out of the division lead before going 18-8 in September.

"(Wells) pitched great ... but everybody that is going out there is throwing great right now," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. "That's what makes it tough. They outplayed us, outpitched us, outdid everything against us."

Alfonso Soriano, Geovany Soto, Blake DeWitt and Carlos Pena all went deep for the Cubs, who won for only the second time in their last nine games.

It was the third time this season Chicago has had four or more home runs in one game. The Cubs have 38 home runs in August, most in the National League.

Lincecum (12-11) lasted six innings and took the loss, giving him a career-high 11 on the season.

"You try and make (Lincecum) work and throw a lot of pitches," said DeWitt, who tripled and scored in the ninth. "Runs are hard to come by against a guy like that. We were able to score couple tonight."

Lincecum had allowed only five runs over his previous five starts. He pitched out of jams in the first and sixth but gave up solo home runs to Soriano and Soto before DeWitt's three-run blast in the seventh.

The two-time NL Cy Young Award winner finished with four walks and four strikeouts. He needs seven more to reach 200 for the fourth consecutive season.

Soriano's home run was his 23rd of the season, one shy of tying Pena and Aramis Ramirez for the team lead.

The other three home runs all came in the seventh, including Pena's solo shot off reliever Steve Edlefsen. It's the first time the Cubs have hit three homers in one inning since June 9, 2010.

"We swung the bats great and Wellsie was something else," Chicago manager Mike Quade said. "To do that kind of damage against Lincecum was a huge plus. The offense was fantastic."

Notes: Soto's homer leading off the seventh snapped an 0-for-25 streak by the Cubs' catcher. ... RHP Matt Garza (6-10) starts for the Cubs on Tuesday and will make his first career appearance against the Giants. Garza has only two wins and a 5.07 ERA on the road this season.

Jets, Giants get snippy in Irene-delayed game

Two days after tropical storm douses area, N.Y. rivals both have players ejected

Santonio Holmes celebrates his touchdown against the Giants. The Jets beat the Giants in Monday's preseason game.

updated 10:20 p.m. ET Aug. 29, 2011

The preseason braggin' rights for the New York metropolitan area belong to the Jets, although neither Rex Ryan's team nor the Giants have much to be happy about.

Mark Sanchez threw a 17-yard touchdown pass to Santonio Holmes and the Jets capitalized on two big special teams plays in 17-3 victory Monday night in a preseason game delayed two days by Hurricane Irene's devastating march up the East Coast.

Bilal Powell had a 1-yard TD run in the fourth quarter and the Jets defense intercepted Eli Manning twice in what probably will be the last major warmup for both teams' starters before the regular season.

The Jets (2-1) will face the Eagles here Thursday. The Giants (1-2) finish their preseason at New England, also on Thursday.

The chippy game featured the Giants' Brandon Jacobs and the Jets' Muhammad Wilkerson being ejected for a fight, a lot of penalties and enough bad plays to make Ryan and counterpart Tom Coughlin concerned with the regular season less than two weeks away.

The banged-up Giants also had defensive end Justin Tuck (stinger) and linebacker Mathias Kiwanuka (groin) leave the game with injuries.

The Jets didn't appear to have any major injuries in the exhibition. They did have more big plays in the game that was hyped as Plaxico Burress' first meeting with the Giants since being released from prison.

Unlike a week ago when he scored a touchdown, the Super Bowl hero was shut out. He didn't catch any of the three passes that Sanchez threw in his direction, and he even made the wrong call in the pregame coin toss.

Jets special teams guru Mike Westhoff saw his unit provide the key plays.

Antonio Cromartie set up Holmes' touchdown with a 70-yard kickoff return, and defensive tackle Jarron Gilbert blocked a Rhys Lloyd field-goal attempt late in the third quarter with the Jets ahead 7-3.

Lloyd had given the Giants a 3-0 lead with 5:00 left in the half with a 34-yarder.

Cromartie's big return came on the ensuing kickoff. The Giants seemed to fall asleep after Cromartie fumbled the ball in the end zone and Lloyd eventually ran him out of bounds at the 35.

Sanchez needed only six plays to cover the distance, finding Holmes on a post pattern that beat good coverage by Corey Webster.

Before the TD pass, Sanchez was 4 of 10 for 13 yards and it was clear he was not on the same page with his receivers.

The only thing the long-time rivals showed in the first half is their defenses are ready for the regular season and the offenses still need a lot of work.

The Giants outgained the Jets 224-73 in the half and trailed 7-3 because Manning could not capitalize after moving the offense to the Jets 27 on the opening drive.

On a second and 10 from the 27, David Harris pressured Manning and his pass to Victor Cruz was too high and intercepted by Jim Leonhard.

Harris got the other interception in the second quarter when Manning badly underthrew Ahmad Bradshaw while under pressure again.

Manning and company jumped to a 3-0 lead, taking advantage when linebacker Clint Sintim recovered a Sanchez fumble at the Giants 39. Bradshaw made the big play, taking a dump-off pass and turning it into a 29-yard gain after running past linebacker Bart Scott.

The Jets were 0 for 6 on third downs in the first half and didn't register their first first down until they got a favorable spot on a fourth-and-1 from their own 28 late in the first quarter.

For Women, Active Sex Life May Mean Better Aging (HealthDay)

MONDAY, Aug. 29 (HealthDay News) -- Sexual satisfaction in older women is associated with successful aging and a better quality of life, a new study finds.

Researchers looked at information gathered from over 1,200 San Diego women, aged 60 to 89, and found that satisfaction with overall sex life was reported by 67 percent of those aged 60 to 69; 60 percent of those aged 70 to 79; and 61 percent of those aged 80 to 89.

"Contrary to our earlier hypothesis, sexual satisfaction was not significantly associated with age," study co-author Wesley K. Thompson, an assistant professor of psychiatry with the Stein Institute for Research on Aging at the University of California San Diego School of Medicine, said in a UCSD news release.

"Although the levels of sexual activity and functioning did vary significantly, depending on the woman's age, their perceived quality of life, successful aging and sexual satisfaction remained positive," he said.

The study is published in the August issue of the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society.

"What this study tells us is that many older adults retain their ability to enjoy sex well into old age," Thompson said. "This is especially true of older adults who maintain a higher level of physical and mental health as they grow older. Furthermore, feeling satisfied with your sex life -- whatever your levels of sexual activity -- is closely related to your perceived quality of life."

While "we cannot assess cause and effect from this study, these results suggest that maintaining a high level of sexual satisfaction may positively reinforce other psychological aspects of successful aging," he concluded.

Real Estate: Buying Foreign Property, Check The Tax And Legal ...

Putting the focus back on regional Australia can help get this country get back on track. The comparative success of the Nationals at the 2010 election remains a largely untold story. At some point we need to reevaluate the subsidies we give to renewable energy whose main effect is to increase the price of electricity for families and businesses. Our nation has apparently decided that it is immoral to go fishing in a tinny but apparently ok to strip fish somewhere else. Just because other countries do, there is no need to have the ability to quote our debt in trillions of dollars. A strong position does not necessarily mean, though it certainly involves, military capacity. At some point this country needs to reflect on its seemingly undying belief that windmills and solar panels are the future. The inquiry makes 21 recommendations of which the government accepts one. The Nationals have been the party to get dams back on the agenda. As a country we will continue to rely and require foreign investment but I am deeply concerned about the increasing control that foreign, state-owned companies are increasingly gaining over our strategic assets. Bridget gave her first speech to the Senate on Thursday and if her performance then is any guide she is set to be a superb performer for the Nationals in the Senate for a long time to come. When the Delphic oracles proclaimed that Australia feeding itself was apparently an inconvenience and it would be better to turn our nations food bowl of the Murray-Darling into a national park, it was the Nationals who said that environmentalism is becoming a foil for despotism and Australia losing the capacity to feed itself was probably not a wise thing to do. I also have ?full confidence? that the Federal Nationals can win government at the next opportunity and, in the words of the Prime Minister, successfully govern for a ?very long, long time?. It is evident in this room today that we are a people that relies on imports. We are not going to generate wealth by subsidising more expensive ways of doing things. We can not predict what future arguments our children might have with the companies that are investing in Australia. Barnaby Joyce Speech to Nationals Federal Council 28th August 2011 We live in the convergence of history. Their agreement with Bob Brown has cost them another $10 billion in off budget spending on renewable energy. It is very much a false illusion that a nation can stand alone as a nation of paper-folders and kitchen renovators. Nigel, Fiona and myself all achieved re-election and we welcome Bridget McKenzie from Victoria. We have to focus on the things we can control, not futile attempts at trying to change the world. Australia has a choice. This is an anti-productivity tax. Nigel has pushed to reopen opportunity for indigenous Australians by overturning the most restrictive and undemocratic aspects of Queensland?s wild rivers laws. Where did the debate come to turn this decision around? It was the Nationals party. Our policies are made in regional Australia, not in Sydney, not in Melbourne and not in Canberra. This revamp will provide targeted tax concessions to five rural areas. In contrast, the Nationals have succeeded over the last few years by putting the interests of regional Australia first, whether that is popular or not. The Nationals have been at the forefront of creating a Coalition taskgroup on foreign investment along with an inquiry in the Senate. I particularly want to thank the efforts of our Senate team. There is no prospect that this government can deliver a change of direction. Property rights must be respected and a fair pecuniary return must be given to the landowner. People like Fred Pascoe, Mayor of Carpentaria Shire and head of the Gulf Savannah Development Corporation. When the government has a problem with the Murray-Darling, Mr Windsor is rolled out to head an inquiry. Ladies and Gentlemen, the Nationals have put regional Australia and its interests back on the agenda over the past few years. But as the east rises it makes the wests problems all that more stark. Ladies and gentlemen, this is not only the most incompetent government in our history, it is our most negative and least- inspiring. In the north of our nation, they have delivered a plan to shut down the live cattle trade. Unlike other foreign investments, investments by state-owned companies must seek approval by the Foreign Investment Review Board no matter what their size. This program is all about attracting the people and the capital to make a regional Australia a more prosperous place. Our influence in all of these debates is why the Nationals remain relevant to regional Australia. Do you think the Australian people will reward governments that double their electricity bills? Of course we should look to become more energy efficient and do things with less. They have neither the authority nor the inclination to do so. Have a problem with a certain member north of Sydney, then Mr Oakeshott is rolled out to defend the government?s refusal for the Member for Dobell or the Prime Minister to explain themselves to Parliament. The government just increased our debt ceiling to a quarter of trillion dollars. Yes others were involved as well but it was the Nationals as a unified political force that worked to make sure we got this industry back up and running again. In accountancy you always knew a wheat grower had a problem when they had gone on a foray into aquaculture, deciding crawbobs and yabbies would be the future of the farm. For decades Queensland was the low-tax, development state thanks to his legacy. If we sit nine people at a table and that person there puts $100 in his pocket, and he walks across to that table and devises a series of transactions between each individual which moves that $100 around the table, then the GDP of that table will be $1000. It is the Nationals who are continuing to fight to maintain our ability to benefit from our huge fishing resources. I want to praise and recognise the performance of our Senators since the last election. Australia cannot afford to be sentimental. Our government decided to shut down a $300 million industry based on a TV program. Like regional Australia, I think our party has a bright future as long as we ceaselessly and fearlessly stand up for the interests of regional Australia. So often in the discussions about gross domestic product, that is GDP, people overstate the argument of proportion while losing focus on the location of the source. We must invest now and concentrate our efforts not in the benevolent thoughts that one can afford when you have money in the bank and a gentle economic breeze in your sails. We can?t keep making things more expensive, racking up more debt and putting up taxes, and still think that we can maintain the same wealth generation capacity that underpins our standard of living. We must understand Australias core business. Europe will deal with Europes problems, even though some of those problems might be insurmountable. All these products come in on a boat. What Australia must do is have a pragmatic and real assessment on how we can best reinvest in these areas to make ourselves stronger. The people of Hughendon and Richmond have access to about 2000 gigalitres of which only about 5 per cent is currently used. I believe our foreign investment review guidelines can be strengthened and the processes that the Coalition has established can suggest practical ways of achieving this. They are now the Labor party?s most loyal lieutenants. So, under this scheme, a superannuation fund would pay only 5 per cent, rather than 15 per cent tax on investments they make in nation-building infrastructure. The Greens? cause always follows this path: find the high-colour issue, beatify the cause, then never be satisfied as they ride the horse called Insatiable Nihilism to the town of Shut Down. That is not the fault of the locals, many of whom want to encourage economic development and build the infrastructure to do so. They have delivered, they?ve delivered in spades. Thanks to Labor, Queensland is now the State with the lowest economic credentials, where bats seem to have more rights than people, where farmers have had their rural soul sold by a Labor government, where fishing has become an immoral past-time, where the economic future for aboriginal people has been taken away so they can live on a ?wild river?, where the major industry of the north, the live cattle trade, can be shut down over night because apparently the nation is run by Four Corners, not a government. They have voted with the government in this parliament around 75 per cent of the time. It is the future of our party and it is the future of our country. Could we do the same to a foreign leader of a country armed with nuclear weapons? Obviously, even the existing law recognises that there is an issue with state-owned companies investing in Australia. Communal assets such as aquifers must be maintained. When they struck their deal with Julia Gillard the Prime Minister said she would ?deliver? for regional Australia. Just this Friday your nation?s gross debt topped $200 billion. It is great to have Nationals in government in New South Wales and Victoria and hopefully the Queensland element of our party will join them in government soon. When one wise sage came up with the brilliant idea to re-engineer our economy on a colourless, odourless gas, who was the sole, original voice that stood against this insanity? The Nationals party. They have continued the strong resurgence of the Nationals. The Nationals vision for the future is a basic but effective one. In the middle of our nation, they have a delivered a plan to shut down the food bowl of our nation. We can?t keep going on like this. These flows meander down through vast tracts of deep, self-mulching loams with immense food producing capacity. A plan that we know from our record delivers results. We must be professionally decisive about how we position ourselves. A wheat farmer is well advised to concentrate on how to better market and grow a wheat crop. If we emulate Labors ideas we will duplicate their results. There is immense opportunity in this nation to develop its disparate corners through greater investment in water security. Our nation demands absolute and utter pragmatism. Because it lacks authority, this government is focused on what the parliament can do for the Labor party, not what the parliament can do for the people. This was a policy that was put to the independents last year and a policy that they rejected in deciding to support a Labor government. This policy aims to leverage government funding by providing a 10 cents in the dollar tax deduction for investments in nation-building infrastructure. Why? Because he borrowed to invest in dams, electrify the rail lines, open international airports and develop the Gold Coast. The continuing importance of our party is reflected in the remarkable success we have had over the past year. Bossie continues to harry the Greens on everything from fishing to the Greens? intimidation and boycotts of perfectly legal businesses. The dams taskforce we have set up visited north Australia earlier this year. That is why the Nationals have been at the policy forefront over the past year to design positive programs to provide a future for regional Australia. We have not built a major dam in this country for over 20 years. The fact is that wind is double and solar 4 times more expensive than coal and gas fired power. We have the opportunity that we have always been denied, wealthy markets proximate to our ports. We have been doing that for centuries without a carbon tax. There is a third choice: no jobs. What we have domestically is a government prone to panic and tax. We can have cheap power and high wages or we can have dear power and low wages. The government says we have a problem with productivity but we are imposing a $9 billion broad-based tax to make the costs of doing business even higher. The independents have proven that they will put their own interests above those of their electorate. Likewise as an accountant, make sure you concentrate on clients not on peripheral distractions. People criticise the federal Coalition for being too negative but one of the most positive things we could do for this country is to stop this insane tax and stop this government?s record spending and waste. Looks nice but catches nothing. It is not parochialism, it is just plain common sense, that you invest in the parts of your business that makes you the money. At the moment, however, these review processes seem to work as effectively as the Venus de Milo would as wicketkeeper for Australia. The American people will insist that the US gets its own house in order which means that external events will become secondary issues. The reality is there is no such thing as green jobs, there are high paying jobs and low paying jobs. It is so essential for our nation that the Nationals continue to represent, protect and progress the interests of regional Australia. Georgetown sees at least 4000 gigalitres go down the Gilbert River every year. About the only thing they haven?t delivered is an election, and that suits Tony Windsor and Rob Oakesott just fine. This government is following a nihilistic, Greens agenda that wants to shut everything down. The fact is the Labor party are not thinking hard enough about the person working in the timber mill in Smithton, the person working on the cattle property near Tenant Creek, the person teetering on the edge of a new Murray-Darling Basin plan in Deniliquin or the person working in the steelworks in the Illawarra as they all shake their heads at the policies coming out of Canberra. Corporations may be strong but even they cannot defy governments. Fiona has led the charge to restore Youth Allowance and succeeded in giving the government its first defeat in this hung Parliament. I was astounded to wake up one morning to realise that our nation was being run by Four Corners. The fact is there is only one party in the Parliament that represents regional Australia. For this system to work property rights must be respected but these rights have not been receiving the same respect lately. Mining should not be located close to residential areas. And to shut down whatever is left they have delivered a carbon tax. The Labor party has got into this trap because they thought they could do a deal with the Greens. We didn?t invent the wheel by taxing walking and we didnt invent the car by taxing horses. It was the Nationals party that developed the Infrastructure Partnerships Scheme. But anyone who has ever dealt with the Greens knows there is no such thing as green peace. That persons name is regional Australia. In our region, great opportunity beckons with the rise of China and India. Much of the electorate out there does not enjoy the benefit of secure employment. The whole rationale of why people work is that the fruits of their labour are then reflected in real estate, in real assets. We have to have a virtual policy epiphany. Water security means food security. However, if that person had not turned up with $100 then GDP of that table would be zero. If Australia keeps mounting up debt, shutting down industries and concocting insane taxes for no effect, then we are in for an almighty fall. Now after two decades of almost unbroken Labor rule, Queensland finds itself as the most poorly performing state in the nation, with the highest unemployment rate. What has changed is the management. At the moment there are no large storages to harness this water and use it to produce more food. Even Rupert Murdoch can be hauled before Parliament. A more detailed response should properly wait for the findings of that inquiry but I think some things are pretty clear. What will the world look like with a Chinese superpower in our back yard? We cannot stop events of this magnitude beyond our borders so how do we prepare for it? To navigate such a precarious sea our nations leadership, in all fields, requires the greatest capacity of selfless aptitude, competence and perseverance. A clinical and unsentimental assessment of what your nation is best at is what is needed. This government is more focused on the 6 votes of the crossbenches than the 13 million votes in the electorate. It is our only defence. The Productivity Commission recently put these subsidies at over $600 million per year and that is set to increase as the renewable energy target grows. I would like to reflect on one of my mentors, Sir Joh Bjelke- Peterson. Following these tactics the Labor party has deserted their natural constituency. Nationals candidates won 38.6 per cent of the primary vote in the seats they ran in, a higher vote than the Labor party although a higher vote than the Labor party is not exactly benchmark of strength at the moment. The source of a nation?s strength is fundamentally its economic capacity. Stop increasing the taxes that hold us back, invest in our regions to increase economic opportunity and start paying back the debt so that we are stronger and more resilient. Under this scheme, individuals in eligible areas would pay no tax up to $55,000, and a family with one child would pay no tax below $75,000. The television you watch, the car your drive, the fuel that is in it, the DVDs you rent, the clothes you wear. I also want to pay tribute to the efforts of our State parties. A recent OECD report has concluded that Australia has a more liberal approach to foreign investment in agriculture than in other countries. Australia is at a crossroads of world political and economic affairs. So what has changed in Queensland? The resources of Queensland are the same, the people are largely the same and the prices for its exports, like coal, have skyrocketed. The reality is now clear that the independents are independent in name only. He sees that the only way for his fellow indigenous people to get ahead is to have access to the jobs and opportunities that other Australians take for granted. Prime agricultural land should not be destroyed. Somebody, somewhere has to be putting something on a boat to go in the other direction to pay for them. In 1980 we could store in dams about 4.5 megalitres per person. So far this Labor government has been in power for 1372 days and have borrowed an average of over $100 million each of those days. The government makes promises that it will deliver a surplus but in the last budget it made $18 billion of additional spending commitments, followed by a carbon tax which will actually cost the budget $4.3 billion. Where are our iron ore mines, our coal mines, our wheat farms, our cotton fields, our cattle industry and many of our tourism attractions? They are in regional Australia. Now the figure is just over 3.5 megalitres. It was the Nationals party that has pushed for a revamp of the zone taxation scheme. This year it has been the Nationals that have stressed that we need to keep control of our strategic assets in this country. Wacka pushed for the Senate inquiry into the insolvency industry which uncovered many questionable practices and called for the licensing of liquidators. What is the point of generations of my family paying off a property when overnight I can find out that someone has a superior right to the ownership of my place than I do? So who has been standing up to make sure that coal seam gas is developed in a way which respects these rights? The Nationals have moved this debate from the middle pages to the front pages partly through an inquiry that we pushed for in the Senate. The whole point of the tax is to make some industries uncompetitive so they we produce less and use less energy. As a miner said to me in Biloela, ?why is the government introducing a carbon tax to give me a green job, I like the job I have got.? And where are these green jobs? I am yet to meet one. I wish people would speak to Fred before they start making decisions that we should not have any more dams. The Federal Nationals achieved a primary vote swing of 4.4 per cent, bigger than the swing to the Greens of 3.97 per cent. I want to discuss why the Nationals party is so essential because it delivers pragmatic action in these areas. Yes he did borrow money at the start but when he left the Treasury was overflowing with cash. In the south of our nation, they have delivered a plan to shut down the forestry industry in Tasmania. Ninety per cent of that GDP is attributable to the nine people who were sitting there at the start. By 2050, if we don?t build any more dams, it will be below 2.5 megalitres per person.

Internet business opportunities for todayThere are literally millions upon millions of Internet business opportunities online. So you might be thinking to yourself that you have a big mountain to climb.

That may be true, I want to emphasize that being your own boss no matter what platform you choose is hard work but we must work intelligently before we start working hard.

Like I said before, there are many Internet business opportunities online ? luckily, I have identified four general categories that you can learn.

Once you learn one or all of these Internet business techniques then you can run wild and unearth all of the moneymaking possibilities that exist online.

Understanding the Internet And Business

Let?s take a moment here to understand the Internet carefully. The Internet connects people and ideas, simple as that.

It?s a giant advertising platform that allows you to find, with pinpoint accuracy, hordes of people who are interested in a particular niche. Once you find them you can ?pair? a product or service to that niche.

The beauty is, it doesn?t have to be your product or service. You may very well want to create your own product or service for a particular niche but I recommend starting off with someone else?s service or product.

Internet business opportunities ? Top 4

You might already know some business opportunities that the Internet has to offer.

There are Ad Sense websites where you build websites, bring in traffic and let Google advertise on your site.

You can always build a website in a targeted niche and let companies advertise their related products and/or services on your site for a fixed fee.

But I find those two a bit boring and just not as lucrative anymore?..

Here are the four major internet business opportunities that you can find online. One thing I want to point out thou; this article that you?re reading is a jumping off point.

You can research all of these topics in further detail using Google and this site absolutely free.

Affiliate Marketing

You can use affiliate networks or big-box stores such as Amazon to promote specific products to specific niche audiences.

Example; you create a hairstyle website with specific keywords on specific hairstyles then you might market a specific kind of wax or hair dry blower.

It?s not your product but it?s your audience and you are the facilitator.

Product Creation

This is just like affiliate marketing but instead of promoting other people?s products or services it?s your product and/or service.

This is more advanced and I highly recommend you start off with affiliate marketing to understand the business first.

SEO Service Providers

Who were the richest people during the gold rush in the old West? It wasn?t the gold miners but it was the shop clerks that sold all the pickaxes and other gold mining tools.

There?s a big market for people to create SEO plans for local businesses, link building, product creation and so forth.

Mobile Sites And App Creation

This is a monster industry that?s getting bigger and bigger by the second and it seems like it came out of nowhere!

The people who access the Internet via mobile trumps traditional PC and laptop users by the millions upon millions. You can create a network of apps in a related niche and sell advertising space or you can create a text messaging services for local business.

Listen, I?m not even scratching the surface here. This side of the internet (app promotion, mobile sites, text messaging services ) is huge and limitless and filled with all kinds of business opportunities.

So how do you get the word out?

Like I mentioned above these Internet business opportunities only exist because you are able to communicate with tons of people in specific niche markets. The question is, how do you do that?

There are many ways to do this. You can choose one or apply several techniques to draw targeted traffic to your offers. They are as follows:

  • On page and off page SEO ? targeting specific keywords for each post that you create and back linking to those posts using anchor text (the keyword that you are targeting) with do follow links.
  • Social networking in specific niches using Facebook, twitter and the like.
  • Pay per click advertising ? reach millions in your target niche with paid advertising through Google, Yahoo, MSN and other search engines.
  • Joint venture or JV opportunities with webmasters or product designers who have access to tons of people in your niche using solo ads or ad swaps.
  • Submitting your offer to an e-mail list with tons and tons of prospects in your targeted niche, this is also related to JV opportunities.

That?s all folks. Actually, that?s not true. I?m sure there are other creative ways to attract targeted traffic to your offers and other Internet business opportunities. I just gave you the broad strokes. It?s now up to you to research these ideas in detail.

Be careful that you don?t fall prey to scammers posing as Internet marketers that will promise you the world and all the money in it with just a push of a button.

Check this site out in detail and I promise you that you?ll get all the information you need for free.

Take care, be well and I wish you the best in all of your Internet entrepreneurial endeavors.

Oh yeah, if any of you would like to add your own strategy and techniques for Internet marketing then please leave your ideas in the comments section below.

We always love to hear from our visitors and fellow Internet marketers.

Inevitable school finance lawsuit update ? Off the Kuff

by Charles Kuffner.

Duly noted.

Superintendents from several low and medium-wealth school districts appear ready to sue the state over its school finance system as early as October. Wayne Pierce, executive director the Equity Center ? a group representing 690 districts ? said Wednesday that superintendents and other local leaders decided at a meeting in Austin they would seek approval to join a lawsuit challenging the finance system this fall. Legislative leaders have been expecting a suit, particularly after lawmakers slashed funding for schools by $2 billion a year in their regular session this year.

?A good number of those attending the meeting were ready to go back and present it to their school boards, to see if there is support for joining the lawsuit,? Pierce said. ?We do believe a legal challenge is imminent and we?re beginning to put things together in preparation for a lawsuit.? Among the problems with the funding system that will be raised in the suit, he said, are the disparities that allow some districts to receive several thousand dollars more per student each year than other districts ? a clear violation of the Texas Constitution.

It has always taken a court order for the Lege to do something about school finance. The only question is whether the next court order will get them to do something good. Electing some better legislators in the meantime would be a wise idea.

English Speaking Swiss Natives for Travel Writing | Articles ...

Hi

This project is for Swiss natives only or people who have lived in the country for a considerable time. Must be able to write in excellent English. I will also consider bids from other writers who have travelled extensively in Switzerland (you will need to demonstrate knowledge and have an excellent command of English).

Requirement:

Keyword texts (very simple keywords)
400 words
Destination guides
There are more than 75 destinations on offer
I am looking to hire long term writers because each text pays $2.00
I would rather someone sign on for in excess of 50 destinations but if you accept that price and only want to do a smaller number I am happy to consider your bid - I will not accept bids for less than 25 destinations though.

This project is about economies of scale. A lot of the destinations are in the same county, same city and in some cases even in the same street. This means only one lot of research is required for a number of articles.

Please note: The rate is non-negotiatable. This is part of a much larger project and all the costings and business plan have been carefully calculated so if you do not agree with the rate please don't bid. I will not open negotiations on the rate either now or during the lifetime of the project.

This is a good opportunity to know you have a guaranteed amount of income for a period of anything up to 3 months depending on how many texts you can handle.

In your bid please state

1. How many texts you are bidding for
2. Which departments you would prefer to cover
3. Estimate of how many you deliver either by week or month.

I am happy for you to only bid low as long as you are very clear in letting me know exactly how many texts you are bidding for.

I will begin awarding the work as soon as suitable bids are received.

Texts need to be on target and meet the brief. They will all be run through copyscape and sub standard texts will be returned for editing/re-writing.

I'll be happy to answer any questions you have via PMB.

I look forward to working with you.

PLEASE DO NOT APPLY IF YOU DO NOT MEET THE CRITERIA - I will simply ignore you and all you will have achieved is a wasted bid.

The Significance of a Logo in Your Branding ... - Home Business Blogs

Author:??James Doan??view profile

Article Tag(s):??advertising, marketing, brand, logo, branding strategy

Creating Company Logo

In addition to creating a unique name, designing your own distinct logo is another effective branding strategy that every business owner can employ. Aside from the name, having a logo to attach to that image reinforces the potential power that your brand has in the market. As a factor that compels customers to pick your brand out of other competing businesses, this is something that every businessman need not take lightly.

Visual recognition is the main purpose of a business or brand logo. Therefore, you need to produce a logo design that would easily stand out and be recognized. There are two steps involved in the process of creating a logo: first is conceptualization and then execution.

The conceptualization part is where you extract ideas from the message that you want your brand to convey to the consumers. Then, the execution part is where you produce creative ideas that will make tangible that concept you have for your brand. The execution part is the most vital part in this process because a good concept could still fail if not executed properly. Here is also where you should decide on the color or styles used in the logo.

Significance of a Logo

Logos are an integral part of a company?s branding strategy mainly because it is a visual representation of the company. For instance, companies create simple yet elegant designs to produce the idea of stability and trust. Meanwhile, other companies create an interactive and complex design to showcase the different features of the company.

Going back to the creation process of a logo, the information that you want to reveal about the company and its product will serve as basis for the creation of the concept for your logo. The same goes with how you utilize the design to showcase those information. There are different methods done to achieve this but you can perform some brainstorming to get the ideas out.

Logo as a Branding Strategy

The company is logo is the most important part in the creation of company image. It can be used as a trademark for the company to represent its existence and identity in the market. As compared to most advertising campaigns, a successful logo is one that is able to stay in the memory of the customers at a longer time and be able to appeal to their attention. This is crucial whenever you have several other similar businesses trying to achieve the same.

If you have decided on a final design for your company logo, then you can utilize that on various mediums such as websites, billiards, ad spaces, business cards, promotional items, and many more. If you did a successful job on the creation alone, the presence of the logo itself will serve as a reminder to people about your company and what type of business you do.

Protecting Your Logo

Since the logo is now a representation or visual image of your company, you must do your best to safeguard it and protect your company?s reputation in the market. If possible, you must patent your logo once you have decided on using it. Since you have invest much on it, you have to ensure that it is solely the property of your company. This applies not just for large-scale companies, but even for small ones as well.

Also, when you are working with somebody else in designing the logo, such as a logo design firm, opt only for those legitimate ones. This would help possible cases of infringement or to protect the reputation of your own company. After all, the main essence behind creating a logo as a branding strategy is to create your business identity.

Microsoft Exec Tries to Spin ?Post-PC? Era Into ?PC Plus?

Microsoft isn't too happy with the "post-PC" title Steve Jobs and others like to use for our increasingly tablet- and smartphone-centric world. Grandparents play a bigger role in child-rearing (AP)

WASHINGTON ? America is swiftly becoming a granny state. Less frail and more involved, today's grandparents are shunning retirement homes and stepping in more than ever to raise grandchildren while young adults struggle in the poor economy.

The newer grandparents are mainly baby boomers who are still working, with greater disposable income. Now making up 1 in 4 adults, grandparents are growing at twice the rate of the overall population and sticking close to family ? if their grandkids aren't already living with them.

Grandparents in recent decades have often filled in for absent parents who were ill or battled addiction, or were sent to prison. The latest trend of grandparent involvement, reflected in census figures released Thursday, is now being driven also by the economy and the graying U.S. population, including the 78 million boomers born between 1946 and 1964 who began turning 65 this year.

"We help out in terms of running errands, babysitting, taking the grandkids to doctors' appointments, and for back-to-school shopping," said Doug Flockhart of Exeter, N.H., listing some of the activities that he and his wife, Eileen, do for their five kids and seven grandchildren. But that's just the start.

They also pitch in with health care payments for family members due to insurance gaps, and their pace of activity has picked up substantially since their daughter, who lives three blocks away, gave birth to her first child this month. Flockhart, a retired architect, likes the family time even if he and his wife worry about their grandkids' futures. Their oldest grandchild is 16.

"It's not so much the day in and day out, it's the big picture as to how these young kids will grow up and pay for a college education and buy a house," he said. "The middle class is so much less well-off than it used to be. We've put aside some savings for them, but with seven grandchildren it can only go so far."

Flockhart's situation is increasingly common, demographers say.

"Grandparents have become the family safety net, and I don't see that changing any time soon," said Amy Goyer, a family expert at AARP. "While they will continue to enjoy their traditional roles, including spending on gifts for grandchildren, I see them increasingly paying for the extras that parents are struggling to keep up with ? sports, camps, tutoring or other educational needs, such as music lessons."

The latest numbers are based partly on separate analyses by Goyer and Peter Francese, founder of American Demographics magazine who is now a population analyst for the MetLife Mature Market Institute. Their data were supplemented with the latest 2010 census figures as well as interviews with Census Bureau and other experts.

Currently about 5.8 million children, or nearly 8 percent of all children, are living with grandparents identified as the head of household, according to 50-state census data released Thursday. That's up from 4.5 million, or 6.3 percent, who lived in such households in 2000.

Much of the increase in grandparent caregivers occurred later in the decade after the recession eliminated jobs for many younger people, surveys indicate. The 8 percent share of children now living with grandparents is the largest in at least 40 years ? and it is believed to be the largest share ever, the population experts say.

In all, there are 62.8 million grandparents in the U.S., the most ever. They are projected to make up roughly 1 in 3 adults by 2020.

Nearly half the states had increases of 40 percent or more over the last decade in the number of grandchildren living with grandparents. They were led by states such as Nevada, Utah, Idaho, Wyoming, Arizona and Kentucky, which had influxes of young families or suffered higher rates of poverty.

On the other end of the scale, New Jersey, New York, Michigan and Louisiana saw the smallest increases, less than 10 percent. Each of those states saw slower population growth overall since 2000, particularly among young people.

The District of Columbia posted a decline of more than 20 percent in grandchildren living with grandparents, a sign of growing gentrification in the nation's capital in which smaller-sized white families are replacing black families with grandparent caregivers, who are moving to suburban areas.

Francese says the stereotype of grandparents who are frail, receding and dependent is changing. He noted that unemployment among workers ages 25 to 34 last year was double that of Americans aged 55 to 64. U.S. households headed by baby boomers also commanded almost half of the nation's total household income, and are more likely to be college graduates than grandparents in previous generations.

These grandparents reject living in senior communities in favor of "aging in place" in their own homes, near family. In 2009, households ages 55 or older spent billions of dollars on infant food, clothes, toys, games, tuition and supplies for grandchildren, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

"Grandparents are supposed to be old, gray-haired people tottering around, but the vast majority are actually in the work force," said Francese, who released a paper on the topic last month. "There is not much doubt that the recent recession has brought grandparents and grandchildren together."

The government figures come as a congressional supercommittee considers possible reductions to Medicare and Social Security to achieve $1.5 trillion in federal spending cuts under the terms of the debt ceiling agreement. Up until now, lawmakers' proposals to cut the entitlement programs have met resistance from older Americans, including those 45 and older, who now make up a majority of the voting-age population.

The committee must issue its recommendations by late November, with action by Congress before year's end, or various parts of government will face automatic spending cuts.

Estella Hyde, 65, who lives near Erie, Pa., said additional government aid ? not spending cuts ? would go a long way for grandparents. She and her husband have raised their granddaughter, now 18, off and on since she was a year old, when Hyde's daughter-in-law at the time said she didn't want the burden.

Eventually the Hydes were able to adopt their granddaughter legally, which allowed her to have coverage under their health plan, but only after the couple fought through red tape and paid $10,000 in adoption fees. After a difficult childhood, her granddaughter will attend college this fall.

"It never happens in a happy situation where a son or daughter comes and says, `I need you to raise a child for me,'" said Hyde, a nursing professor who is now retired. "We were very lucky, we were able to financially take care of her and support her. But many grandparent caregivers need other sources of assistance."

In all, the states with the highest shares of children living in households headed by grandparents are in the South and West. They include Hawaii, Mississippi, Louisiana, New Mexico, South Carolina and Texas, each with at least 1 in 10 children living in grandparent households.

Among the states with high concentrations of grandparents overall ? regardless of their living arrangement ? are Maine, West Virginia, Florida, Pennsylvania, Iowa and New Hampshire, according to some estimates.
