Tunisians yearn for the good old days of a strongman

Tunisians still revile ousted leader President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali, but admiration is rising for his predecessor, who had strongman tendencies of his own but also helped Tunisia flourish.

By John Thorne,?Correspondent / April 24, 2013

Beji Caid Essebsi (r.), former Tunisian Prime Minister and founder of the Nidaa Tounes party, arrives for a round of consultations with other political parties at the Carthage Palace in Tunis, last week. Mr. Essebsi, an advisor to Bourguiba who also held several ministerial posts under him, steered Tunisia through a bumpy period in 2011 as head of a caretaker government.

?See? That?s Nasser, and Saddam Hussein, and that?s Hafez al-Assad,? she said. ?Do you know who he was?? Silence. ?He was president of Syria,? the mother continued. ?You need to know history.?

A recent visit to the tomb of Habib Bourguiba, Tunisia?s first president, was a chance for?Fatima Trabelsi to teach her daughter Tawba about ?the greatest Arab leader,? she says.

In reality, Bourguiba?s record is mixed. Although he modernized Tunisia, he also jailed and tortured his critics.?

But these days many Tunisians, rattled by post-revolution instability, like to remember him as a fatherly figure who brought education, development, women?s rights, and a sense of direction.??

That nostalgia could influence how Tunisians vote in elections later this year. It also raises a crucial question about democratic transition: whether the instinct to trust in charismatic leaders will be replaced by trust in democracy itself.

Unemployment is up, investment is down, and fear of violence by Islamic extremists is growing. Many Tunisians say surer hands are needed at the tiller. They?are delighted to be rid of Bourguiba?s successor, Zine El Abidine Ben Ali, who was toppled in 2011. But according to a February poll by the International Republican Institute,?only 52 percent prefer a democracy, even if unstable, while 42 percent want a stable dictatorship.

Promised democracy, practiced dictatorship

Stable dictatorship is what Bourguiba offered, despite a promising start as a democratic voice.

He was born in 1903 in?the coastal city of?Monastir and was educated in France. Back home he joined the Destour party, which wanted a constitution to secure Tunisians? rights under French rule. He formed a bolder splinter group, the Neo-Destour, and negotiated independence?from France?in 1956.

That involved ruthlessly sidelining a former ally, Salah Ben Youssef. Bourguiba became president; Ben Youssef was shot dead in a Frankfurt hotel in 1961. His murder remains unsolved, but his overall fate set a?precedent. Bourguiba?enforced a secularist order and stayed in power by crushing opponents. In 1987, old and ailing, he was removed by his prime minister, Mr. Ben Ali.

Ben Ali ran a police state and let development lag while his family enriched themselves through corruption.

After Ben Ali?s departure, the long-persecuted Islamists of the Ennahda party won October 2011 elections on a platform of democracy and a return to what they call Tunisia?s Arab-Muslim heritage. Ennahda now heads a coalition government.

Backlash?

Not all Tunisians like Ennahda?s approach. Three months after the party?s victory, thousands stood in a Monastir stadium, cheering a different brand of leader.??Oh Beji! Oh Beji!? they chanted as Beji Caid Essebsi took the podium.?

Mr. Essebsi, an advisor to Bourguiba who also held several ministerial posts under him,?steered Tunisia through a bumpy period in 2011 as head of a caretaker government.

Watching him?in the stadium, economist Mahmoud Ben Romdhane recalled crowds cheering Bourguiba and urged Essebsi to re-enter politics. Last summer Essebsi founded the Nidaa Tounes party; Mr. Ben Romdhane is on its executive council.

The party?s rivals call it a haven for?unreformed?members of past regimes. That criticism is unfair, says Ben Romdhane, who describes Nidaa Tounes as a big tent. His own example is a case in point.

As a union leader and senior member of Amnesty International, Ben Romdhane opposed both Bourguiba and Ben Ali?for their autocratic rule. But he?admires the former?s?vision.

?Bourguiba had culture, political acumen, and a strategy for Tunisia,? he says. ?That legacy failed to bring democracy. What we want to do now is make that link.?

Demanding competence?

Mrs. Trabelsi and her husband, Mounir Dellech, run a business manufacturing work uniforms in their home town of Sousse. She says?sales are down and customers are requesting to buy on credit.?

?We?ve gone from crisis to crisis,? Mr. Dellech says. ?These kinds of problems would never have existed under Bourguiba."

On April 6 the family visited Monastir for the commemoration of Bourguiba?s death in 2000. Mrs. Trabelsi, in dress and headscarf, explored the memorabilia with Tawba. Her husband trailed behind them in a gray-green suit, absently fingering an unlit cigar.

Outside, the wind?was snapping?banners with Bourguiba quotes. ?Work is the first element of human dignity,? read one. A few vendors gloomily?tried to sell?cotton candy and knick-knacks.

It?s scenes like this that have some Tunisians looking to Nidaa Tounes. Dellech is one of them. He doesn?t see evidence of closet autocrats; he does see a record of competence.

?Beji Caid Essebsi is experienced, and we need people with experience,? he says. ?And not all members of [Bourguiba?s and Ben Ali?s now-defunct party] were dishonest. Some kept the country working.?

Nidaa Tounes?narrowly beat Ennahda in a poll last month by EMRHOD, a Tunisian-Algerian research company. But success depends on presenting a clear economic program and ? ultimately ??building a party with appeal beyond?the glow that surrounds Essebsi, says Ben Romdhane.?

Nidaa Tounes is opening offices around Tunisia and has links to trade unions and entrepreneurs, he says. It has also formed a coalition with four other opposition parties to counter Ennahda?s electoral weight.

Those things matter. Increasingly, Tunisians stress that rhetoric comes second to results.

Among them are Wafa Jguirim and Saifddine Benaicha, information technology students in Monastir. They paused outside the mausoleum while Mr. Benaicha bought a Habib Bourguiba car air freshener.

Both see promise in Nidaa Tounes. ?But every party needs to be scrutinized,? says Ms. Jguirim. ?I think since the revolution, Tunisians have understood that.?

Watch an Airplane Turn Fog Into Beautifully Spinning Cloud Spirals

We've seen planes create a fiery vortex in the sky before, but here's a more peaceful version of it happening in real time. It's majestically beautiful. The wingtip vortices formed when an Airbus A340 landed at Zurich Airport on a foggy night. Though it looks gorgeous, vortices can be pretty dangerous. More »

Legalise multi-partner marriage - group | Stuff.co.nz

A group is calling for the Government to consider legalising multi-partner marriages.

The group set up a Facebook page just before the Marriage Amendment Bill passed through Parliament last week, legalising gay marriage.

A statement on the page described multi-partner - or polyamorous - marriage as "responsible, adult, committed non-monogamy," and said all committed loving relationships between adults regardless of number should be respected and given legal acknowledgement.

"Some Australian Greens have now got a lobby group going, there are several MPs around the world coming out as poly and poly-friendly and it seems the time is right to at least bring it to the attention of the New Zealand public and New Zealand parliament," the group said.

"This will be a long-term project but with the rest of the world getting on the bandwagon legal multiple partner marriages/unions may one day be accepted."

The "slippery slope" towards legalising polygamy, polyamory or incestuous relationships has often been an argument raised by opponents of the Marriage Amendment Bill.

Last year the member in charge of the bill, Labour Party MP Louisa Wall, and Conservative Party leader Colin Craig went head to head in a live online debate about marriage equality.

At the time Mr Craig predicted the bill would inevitably raise issues surrounding discrimination to people in polygamous or polyamorous relationships who could not marry and yesterday said it was "no surprise" the Support Legalise Polyamory in New Zealand group had started up and there was no doubt marriage would be further redefined in the future.

"We have opened the doors to this."

He said it had begun when the line was moved for civil unions.

"They said that was it, they'd never touch marriage again, and that's what they're saying now."

Mr Craig said legalising gay marriage created a precedent for further redefinition of marriage, which he had been against from the start.

Last year Ms Wall said marriage was based on love, which was why gay and lesbian people wanted the same rights.

"Marriage is the institution of two people who love each other committing themselves to a shared life together. This bill will not address polygamy or other forms of relationship."

Mr Craig said if people were intellectually honest they would see the arguments for legalising gay marriage could apply directly to those in other alternative relationships.

"If it's about love and commitment and respect, don't they have that? They would say they do."

This One-Way Trip To Mars Is Brought To You By ...

NASA's Hubble Space Telescope took this close-up of the red planet Mars when it was just 55 million miles away in 2007.

NASA/UPI/Landov

NASA's Hubble Space Telescope took this close-up of the red planet Mars when it was just 55 million miles away in 2007.

NASA/UPI/Landov

In New York on Monday, a group of scientists and entrepreneurs launched a quixotic program that could allow you (yes you!) to make a trip to Mars. But you can't come back.

The Mars One nonprofit organization announced that it is now open to applicants interested in making a commercially sponsored one-way mission to Mars.

This isn't the first proposed Mars mission on the books. NASA has it as a long-term goal to send astronauts to the red planet. And space entrepreneur Dennis Tito recently announced plans to send a couple for a fly-by in 2018.

But Mars One stands apart in very important ways: First, it will strive to be self-financed by selling the astronaut selection process, launch and landing as a reality television show. Second, the lucky winners will live out their lives in an inflatable habitat on another planet.

"If somebody's an outdoors person who says, 'I need my mountains, I need to smell the flowers,' then it's not the mission for him," says Norbert Kraft, the group's chief medical officer.

Mars One co-founder Bas Lansdorp says that the idea of selling the trip as prime-time television really seemed doable after he saw the revenue numbers from the London Olympics. That event garnered more than $4 billion in just over three weeks, he says. With that in mind, the mission's $6 billion price tag "is actually a bargain."

In fact, there will be a lot more to watch than the launch and landing. Even today, visitors to the Mars One website can check out public videos from applicants and vote on who they like the most. Those liked more will be more likely to go on to the next round of astronaut selection. Future rounds will be televised: Participants in each nation will square off against each other with only a single participant making his or her way to years of training. That final round will be an internationally broadcast show in which six teams of four vie for the chance to get voted off of Earth.

It sounds crazy. But is it really crazier than shows about people who hunt alligators or drive trucks on roads of ice? Lansdorp says that he has consulted with Big Brother co-creator Paul R?mer, who thinks that the show could work. Over the years, Lansdorp says, viewers will develop a close connection to the astronaut applicants. "That's why it will stay interesting for a very, very long time," he says.

Lansdorp says that his biggest worry at the moment is his ability to raise the money needed to send rovers and supplies to Mars in advance of the 2023 landing. But he hopes that the astronaut application process will help to raise money. "We are already receiving a lot of interest from [broadcasters]," he says.

The application itself might be a money-maker, too: It will cost U.S. residents $38 to put their name down for a one-way journey.

Boston Marathon bombing investigation turns to motive

By Ben Berkowitz and Ross Kerber

BOSTON (Reuters) - With the surviving suspect in the Boston Marathon bombings lying seriously wounded in a hospital and unable to speak on Saturday, investigators worked to determine a motive and whether the ethnic Chechen brothers accused of the attack acted alone.

Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, 19, was captured late on Friday after a gunfight with police that ended a daylong manhunt and sent waves of relief and jubilation throughout Boston. His brother, Tamerlan, 26, died on Thursday after a shootout with police.

The younger brother was shot in the throat and could not speak because of injuries to his tongue, said a source close to the investigation. It was unclear when he would be able to talk again or when he would be charged.

"It's serious ... he's not yet able to speak," Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick told reporters on Saturday. "We have a million questions and those questions need to be answered."

The brothers are suspected of setting off bombs made in pressure cookers and packed with ball bearings and nails at the crowded finish line of Monday's marathon, killing three people and injuring 176.

Life in Boston began to return to normal on Saturday as the Red Sox returned to Fenway Park for the first time since the bombings, paying an emotional tribute to the victims and the first responders before their baseball game.

"When (Tsarnaev) was apprehended and we saw the reactions of everyone in Watertown, I just got online and got two tickets for the game," said Linda Gibbs, 52, from Westborough, Massachusetts. "We just really wanted to be here and to support everyone."

Tsarnaev had been hiding in a boat parked in the backyard of a house in the suburb of Watertown and was captured after a resident spotted blood on the boat and called police. He was being treated at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston.

The FBI believes Tamerlan was the leader of the pair, although investigators were checking on people who had contact with both brothers to see if anyone else was involved, said a senior U.S. law enforcement source.

Early indications are the brothers acted alone, Watertown Police Chief Edward Deveau told CNN on Saturday. "From what I know right now, these two acted together and alone," he said. "But as far as this little ... group, I think we got our guys."

PARENTS SAY SONS FRAMED

The FBI said it interviewed Tamerlan in 2011 at the request of a foreign government - identified by a law enforcement source as Russia - after that country raised concerns that he followed radical Islam. The FBI did not find any "terrorism activity."

Tamerlan traveled to Moscow in January last year and spent six months in the region, a law enforcement source said, but it was unclear what he did while he was there.

President Barack Obama said on Friday after the capture that questions remained from the bombings, including whether the two suspects received any help. Obama has described the bombings an act of terrorism.

Tsarnaev was a student at the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth and is believed to have been on the college campus on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, said a university official, citing witnesses, swipe cards and security cameras.

The family emigrated to the United States about a decade ago. The brothers spent their early years in a small community of Chechens in the central Asian country of Kyrgyzstan, a mainly Muslim nation of 5.5 million. The family moved in 2001 to Dagestan, a southern Russian province that lies at the heart of a violent Islamist insurgency and where their parents now live.

In separate interviews, the parents of the Tsarnaev brothers said they believed their sons were incapable of carrying out the bombings. Others remembered the brothers as friendly and respectful youths who never stood out or caused alarm.

"Somebody clearly framed them. I don't know who exactly framed them, but they did. They framed them. And they were so cowardly that they shot the boy dead," father Anzor Tsarnaev said in an interview with Reuters in Dagestan's provincial capital, Makhachkala, clasping his head in despair.

Ruslan Tsarni, who said he was an uncle of the brothers, told CNN on Saturday he first noticed a change in Tamerlan Tsarnaev's religious views in 2009. He said the radicalization of his nephew happened "in the streets of Cambridge."

ENEMY COMBATANT?

The bombings prompted contact between the United States and Russia on terrorism and the Kremlin said on Saturday that the presidents of both countries had agreed by telephone to increase cooperation on counterterrorism.

On Saturday, several Republican lawmakers called on Obama to try Tsarnaev as an "enemy combatant" under terms of war, without entitlement to Miranda rights - usually given by police to suspects before they are interrogated so statements can be admissible in court.

Authorities did not read the teenager the Miranda warning.

A Justice Department official said the government was invoking the public safety exception to Miranda to question the suspect extensively about other potential explosive devices or accomplices and to gain critical intelligence.

The Federal Public Defender Office said on Saturday it would represent Tsarnaev once charges were filed.

After combing through a mass of pictures and video from the site in the minutes before the Boston marathon bombing, the FBI publicized pictures of the two men on Thursday and asked the public for help in identifying them.

Just hours later, events began to unfold with the fatal shooting of a police officer on the campus of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and finally the Watertown firefight, during which police say the brothers threw bombs at officers. Tamerlan suffered fatal wounds, while Dzhokhar escaped on foot.

The hunt for Tsarnaev emptied Boston's streets as the city went into lockdown for most of Friday. Public transportation was suspended and air space restricted. Famous universities, including Harvard and MIT, closed after police told residents to remain at home.

(AP) ? Manu Ginobili and Tony Parker scored 18 points each as the San Antonio Spurs led from early in the first quarter and beat the Los Angeles Lakers 91-79 on Sunday in Game 1 of their Western Conference first-round series.

Tim Duncan added 17 points and 10 rebounds, Matt Bonner had 10 points and Kawhi Leonard had eight points and 11 rebounds for San Antonio.

Dwight Howard had 20 points and 15 rebounds, Steve Nash scored 16 points and Pau Gasol added 16 points and 16 rebounds for Los Angeles.

Despite the double-doubles from Howard and Gasol, the Lakers failed to take full advantage of their inside presence, much to the consternation of the injured Kobe Bryant, who watched the national broadcast.

"Post. Post. Post," Bryant tweeted in reference to the Lakers' offense.

Bryant is out for the remainder of the season with a torn Achilles.

Los Angeles' length caused San Antonio problems early as the Spurs missed their first three shots ? all inside the paint ? as they altered their shots to avoid Howard and Gasol.

Nash, who returned after missing nine games with a hip/hamstring injury, gave the Lakers their only lead with a jumper on the game's opening possession.

Duncan broke the drought, hitting a pair of jumpers over Gasol that gave San Antonio a 4-2 lead with 9:33 remaining and the Spurs led the rest of the way.

The Lakers shot 35 percent from the field in the first half, primarily missing shots from 11 feet and out. Los Angeles had 10 points in the paint, but could not consistently work the ball inside for attempts.

"What I would say if I was there right now," Bryant tweeted. "Pau get ur (butt) on the block and don't move till u get it."

Los Angeles pulled within 28-24 with 7 minutes left as Howard had four points in an 8-0 run, including an alley-oop dunk off a feed from Gasol to cap the run.

It was the closest Los Angeles would come as San Antonio extended its lead to 10 points in the quarter.

The Lakers shot 50 percent from the field in the second quarter, but also had seven turnovers.

Los Angeles went on an 11-4 run to cut San Antonio's lead to 54-50, but the Spurs rebuilt their lead once again.

Manu Ginobili hit a pair of 3s to give San Antonio a 70-57 lead to close the third. Ginobili was 6 for 13 from the field and 3 for 5 on 3s.

Leonard blocked a 3-point attempt by Metta World Peace and then made a layup on the ensuing fast break. Leonard faked an attempt, sending World Peace flying past him for an open shot that gave San Antonio a 76-63 lead with 8 minutes left.

NOTES: Duncan and Parker have won 593 games in 12 seasons, which is three shy of tying the Lakers' Derek Fisher and Kobe Bryant for fourth all-time. ... San Antonio evened their overall series with Los Angeles at 75 wins apiece, giving the Spurs a .500 or better record against every team in the NBA.

Daft Punk sets record on Spotify with 'Get Lucky'

NEW YORK (AP) ? Daft Punk has set a record on Spotify.

The music service says the French electronic duo's song "Get Lucky" had the biggest streaming day for a single track on Friday in the U.S. and the United Kingdom. Spotify wouldn't release the number of streams.

Macklemore & Ryan Lewis' "Thrift Shop" previously held the record for most streams in a day in the U.S. British band Bastille had the title in the United Kingdom with the song "Pompeii."

Daft Punk's "Get Lucky" features rapper-producer Pharrell. It's the first single from the group's fourth album, "Random Access Memories," due out May 21. It's their first studio album since 2005's "Human After All," though the band scored the "Tron: Legacy" soundtrack in 2010. They won a Grammy in 2009.

Spotify launched in 2008.

For Mother's Day this year I wanted to treat myself to a "spa like" treatment at home with the Hydrating Spa System by Dermagist. I wanted? my hands, feet and body to feel good not only on the actual day but weeks before hand. I am one of those people that loves to put on lotion after a bath or shower. I also like to treat each area of my body, not just my face or legs. There are three bottles in the Hydrating Spa System. The body lotion for deep hydration and firming of your skin, the hand cream for removal of age spots and discoloration along with tightening of the skin, and my favorite the foot cream for soothing and relaxing your feet and combating dryness that occurs over time. I really did enjoy all of the treatments but the foot cream is my favorite, it contains Neem, Manuka and Karanja oil, Shea butter and Eucalyptus. After a long day my feet need it.

?This set includes:

As Mothers we tend to neglect ourselves in the pampering department, thinking you will get to it later or it can wait til later. This year make it about you!? If you are looking to treat yourself, or have someone else treat you to a spa treatment this Mother's Day I recommend this at home system that you can use over and over again to help your skin feel great all year.
