Important tips for diy home improvement projects - Dadka

by on June 28, 2012

So, you?ve decided to take it upon yourself to do a little bit of remodeling, eh? And not just moving a couch or a couple of pictures around, but a major project like perhaps creating a home theater room or installing some new countertops. Good for you.

Thanks to websites like YouTube, HGTV and DIY, it certainly makes things easier than it used to be. However, with every project comes a certain amount of risk. If you?re reading this article, the purpose of it is to prevent you from encountering the risk of an injury as it relates to your Do It Yourself home remodeling project. Chances are, if you follow these five tips, you should be well on your way to a job well (and safely) done:

Double-check your insurance. By law, every home is supposed to be insured, but when you?re going to be doing some remodeling, it?s a good idea to make sure that it covers all kinds of potential mishaps including loss, fire and personal injury claims.

Make sure you have a First Aid kit nearby. When you?re working around tools, sometimes boo-boos happen. Your kit should include some Band-Aids, gauzes, antiseptic, hydrogen peroxide and also a list of emergency numbers?just in case. Also, be sure to review all of the kinds of chemicals that you?ll be working with so that you can prevent yourself from any inhaling any harmful fumes (a face mask will usually do the trick).

Keep children and pets at a distance. Two of the most unpredictable creatures on the earth are children and pets. They are also two of the busiest and most curious, all of which are a potentially dangerous combination when it comes to doing house projects. If your kids are older and you feel like there are some assignment that they could handle that could be of assistance to you, that?s fine. But when it comes to the younger kids and your dog or cat, it?s best to either work when they?re asleep, outside or visiting elsewhere.

Attend to all of your power tools. It?s understandable why in the midst of the project, you might find yourself feeling a bit overwhelmed and need to take a break. Just make sure that when you do, you turn off all of the electric tools that you are using. Leaving one unattended (and on) is a surefire way to either mess up the surface that the tool is sitting on or to harm someone that?s unsuspectingly walking by.

Thoroughly read and follow the instructions. When it comes to DIY home projects, the greatest cause of personal injury is probably related to this one: not reading or following the instructions all of the way through. A house project is not like a food recipe. When you?re cooking, you might be able to improvise a bit and still have things turn out OK. Not so much with house jobs. The fact that you?re doing it yourself is reason enough to feel proud. Don?t put you or someone else in potential physical danger by thinking that it?s cool to edit some of the instructions. Nine times out of 10, it?s not. Go step-by-step. That?s the best way to come up with the end result that you?re looking for.

94% Marley

Director Kevin MacDonald and co-producer Ziggy Marley bring forth the most definitive look back at the life of Bob Marley, in the new documentary "Marley". From the formation of "The Wailers" and the comings and goings of different members of the band (including Peter Tosh and Jimmy Cliff), to Marley's dealings in Rastafarian and how it bled into his Reggae music; and also from his controversial lifestyle punctuated by being a "womanizer" (eleven children from seven different women) to his humanitarian nature, this in-depth (two and a half hour) documentary will immensely satisfy fan and novice alike. I, like many other younger American non-Rasta's, had grown up knowing Bob Marley for his more commercially catchy hits and from his countless depictions on a multitude of shirts worn by numerous Bay Area potheads. But, being a novice, going into this film I wasn't particularly interested in seeing a two and a half hour movie about the life and times Bob Marley. A story I thought I knew, and had heard, countless times before. But that notion changed rather abruptly within the first few minutes of this movie. And by the end, due to the brilliant investigative journalistic nature of MacDonald which elevates "Marley" from an average movie to a MUST SEE documentary, audiences who see this film will walk out with an in-depth appreciation for the man who wrote some of the most poetic and revolutionary lyrics in music history. "Marley" is the no holds barred dissection of a particular subject (or subject matter) which fans of great documentaries will crave (and in fact, was nowhere to be found in the films of 2011). And for a documentary that was originally supposed to be directed by Martin Scorsese, after seeing what MacDonald has accomplished here, it would be hard to imagine "Marley" being more perfectly executed in anybody else's hands. What truly sets "Marley" apart from other bio-documentaries and A&E specials is how, in a very PBS way, MacDonald uses a seemingly endless amount of archival footage, as well as interviews with almost everybody (still alive) who had anything to do with Marley's upbringing and his life as a world famous musician, as the narration. It was quite apparent that MacDonald had full access to any and all information he wanted, and as far as I could see, he thankfully took complete advantage of this fact. As audiences, we hear from Marley's family and peers about how as a young boy he was an outcast because of his mixed-race. We also hear from notable Jamaican artists and record executives, who saw his maturation into a musician that worked to bridge the gaps, not only in Jamaica (during times of war) but nationwide as well. In this way, MacDonald enables audiences to intimately know Bob Marley on every level (get your mind out of the gutter). But all the pure information aside, what MacDonald does very well here is not creating a documentary which totally sanctifies Bob Marley, much as many movies (tributes) do when celebrities with checkered pasts die. MacDonald captures recollections of Marley from both those who loved the man and those who thought him to be nothing more than a womanizing zealot, who was sadly not as politically motivated as he should have been. Final Thought: Overall "Marley" is a brilliant example of an archetype onto how all biographical documentaries should be made. Grade "A" filmmaking, in conjunction with a larger than life subject (subject matter) is what elevates "Marley" into one of the most entertaining two and a half hour documentaries I have ever seen. If you are at all a Bob Marley fan (casual or otherwise) and if you are able to, see "Marley", any way you can, before Hollywood makes a more commercialized (legacy ruining) feature film version of his life in a few years; starring Mekhi Phifer no doubt. Use This Guide To Home Improvement! | Fuel Cell Powered

Whether you are inexperienced or you have years of experience, making home repairs will improve your way of life. Your home is part of who you are. The following information is designed to help you get an idea of what you can do improve your home, thus improve your life.

Consider insulating your residence during your next home improvement project. Place weather-stripping on all your doors and windows. If you are able to minimize the amount of air getting into your home, your heating and cooling systems will run better. This means that you will save money on your energy bills.

If the outside of your home is looking a bit drab and old, why not put new outside light fixtures up. There are a lot of outside light fixtures available on the market and they all have something special. Putting a new light on your home adds a touch of class, elegance and style.

When it comes to home improvement, have a plan from the start through the finish of your intended improvement. This will ensure that you stay within your budget and that you complete your intended project without the emotional factors being involved. It can be obvious both to a potential buyer and to your pocketbook if a home improvement project is made up as you go.

A great way to increase the value of your house as well as it?s functionality is to add another bathroom. Try to place it in an area that already has access to plumbing, like next to a kitchen or in the basement. A bathroom that only includes a toilet and sink will still be a welcome addition.

Consider replacing the front door to the home if it is looking outdated. If the door is in good shape but the door knob is getting flimsy, install a new one. This is the first thing that a potential buyer is going to see so you want to make sure that it looks as good as possible.

For a simple, natural way to fill in scratches in your hardwood floors, rub a piece of (shelled) walnut into the scratches. Bits of flesh from the nut will fill in the damaged spots, while the oils in the nut will help to moisturize and protect gouged areas, ultimately camouflaging flaws.

To add a unifying effect to your home?s decor, consider painting all of the trim white (or another color that complements every room?s walls). Matching trim throughout the house adds visual continuity as you move from room to room and ties your decor together.

If you are looking for home improvement projects that are guaranteed to raise the value of your home, you can?t go wrong with a bathroom or kitchen remodel. Builders and real estate agents estimate that perfecting these rooms is likely to earn you more than 100 percent back on your investment when you put your home up for sale.

Do not overlook common household objects for solving organizational or storage problems in your home. You can make a coat rack from a board and some old cupboard knobs, for instance, and you can use baby food jars for storing small fasteners and pieces of hardware. Not only does this help you to get organized, but you are saving money and recycling, too.

A great home improvement tip is to always communicate to your partners what your plans are in the very beginning. You should make sure that all partners know what is expected of them beforehand so that there is no confusion and misunderstanding of their roles in this project. This will save you time, stress, and money.

Use school glue on your wall paper repairs. This cheap glue dries clear and works whether you are repairing a turned up corner, a tear, or a bubble that wasn?t properly addressed when the wall paper was hung. The squeeze tip bottle even allows you to easily insert the glue into small places.

Home improvement are ongoing projects that are meant to keep your house and property in the best possible condition. One thing that is often forgotten about are the gutters on your roof. Semi-annual cleaning of the gutters will make sure that rain water will drain properly and not cause leakage problems.

When trying to fix up a house to flip it, pay attention to the kitchen. If has linoleum floors, replace them with tile. It makes the place look much better. You should examine the counters and look at replacing them. They don?t have to be granite, but granite counter tops increase the value of the home and up your chances of selling it.

With the previous tips floating through your thoughts, you ought to be ready to get started on your own home improvement projects! It does take some hard work and some attention to details, but if you keep at it, it is indeed achievable. So, go out there, enjoy yourself and start improving your home!

If you are looking for a good home improvement accessories, then you would need a robot cleaner. We highly recommend you check out the irobot 440 or you also can find out more when you click here.

When we turn on the A/C in the summer, our first thought is probably one of relief. If it's 100 degrees in the shade, we're probably not thinking about how our decision might influence the environmental legacy we leave for future generations. It's not that we don't care, it's just that we typically don't think about our behavior in terms of long-term, inter-generational tradeoffs. But new research suggests that reminders of our own mortality may encourage us to keep future generations in mind as we make decisions.

In a study published in Psychological Science, a publication of the Association for Psychological Science, Kimberly Wade-Benzoni, of Duke University Fuqua School of Business, and her colleagues decided to focus on a kind of problem they call an "intergenerational dilemma," examining whether certain factors might lead the current generation to make sacrifices on behalf of future generations, even when there aren't any material or economic incentives to do so.

When people make decisions, they often focus on rewards in the present at the expense of rewards in the future a phenomenon called 'intertemporal discounting.' The hurdle to overcome with intergenerational dilemmas is that they require us to focus on future rewards that will be enjoyed by someone else. These dilemmas are unique because there isn't just a temporal distance between decision-maker and beneficiary, there's a social distance, too.

Wade-Benzoni and her colleagues hypothesized that reminding people of their mortality might be one way to strengthen their connection to future others, activating what the researchers call a 'legacy motivation.' They theorized that thoughts of death might be enough to motivate people to want to leave a positive legacy, even when that legacy spans several generations, effectively overcoming the temporal and social hurdles involved in intergenerational dilemmas. The researchers decided to test their hypothesis in several experiments.

In the first experiment, participants were entered into a lottery, in which they had the chance to win $1000. Some participants were asked to read a newspaper article about an airplane passenger's death in a freak accident priming their thoughts of death and mortality while others read an emotionally neutral story. All the participants were told that they could designate a portion of their lottery winnings to a charity that serves impoverished communities. Some were told that the donations would serve the needy now, while others were told that their donations would go to the needy at a future date.

The researchers found that those participants who had been primed with thoughts of mortality gave more money to the future-oriented charity than to the present-oriented charity. The findings suggest, in line with the original hypothesis, that thinking about death motivated participants to behave in ways that ensured their personal legacy, leaving their mark by channeling their lottery donations toward needy others in the future.

"Creating a positive legacy offers people a means of symbolic immortality," says Wade-Benzoni. "This psychosocial benefit is powerful enough to overcome very basic human tendencies to discount the value of benefits that will be enjoyed by others in the future."

Wade-Benzoni and her colleagues wanted to know more about the specific factors that drive the relationship between mortality and legacy motivation, so they decided to conduct a second experiment in which they created a hypothetical scenario related to energy and the environment.

Participants were asked to play the role of VP for a large energy company. The company had supposedly discovered a new source of efficient, inexpensive energy, and the participant's task as VP was to decide how much of the energy should be used by the company today versus how much should be allocated to another recipient. Some participants were given the option of donating to another organization that would benefit immediately; some were given the option of donating to another group that would benefit in the future; and some were given the option of donating to their own organization in the future. The participants were told that all of the other beneficiaries would make better use of the new energy supply than thier own company would in the present.

As in the first experiment, some participants were primed with thoughts of mortality, and then all the participants were asked to make their energy allocation. To get at the possible connection to future others, the researchers asked participants whether they felt an affinity with the other group.

Just as they expected, the researchers found that participants who were primed with thoughts of mortality were more likely to allocate the energy toward future beneficiaries. Furthermore, this desire to help future others was related to their sense of connection to the beneficiary.

In light of findings from the well-established literature on intertemporal choice, the behavior demonstrated in these studies under conditions of mortality salience is strikingly counter-intuitive. And that is exactly why this research is important, says Wade-Benzoni these new studies examine how people make decisions across both temporal and social distances.

"Acting on the behalf of future generations can paradoxically represent a dramatic form of self-interest immortality striving," she explains. "Believing that we have made a difference by leaving a group, an organization, a professional field, or the world a better place helps us to gain a sense of purpose in our lives and buffer the threat of meaninglessness posed by death."

The key to effective environmental policies, then, may be to help citizens see their day-to-day decisions as trade-offs between current and future generations and remind them, subtly, that none of us will live forever. We will all, as Shakespeare put it, shuffle off this mortal coil; the question is what legacy will we leave?

Hidden Benefit Of Forum Marketing Not Always Discussed | Internet ...

?

I have enjoyed forum marketing to make money online over the years. If you do it right it can provide many benefits to your Internet business.

Anyone that does forum marketing understands the two primary benefits are the knowledge you can learn from reading the posts, and the possibilities to make sales for products and services you offer. There is actually one hidden benefit that is not always discussed and can really have a tremendous impact on your Internet business.

I remember reading one time where the owner of the Warrior Forum, Allen Says, claimed that over $1 million in business had been done through joint ventures created in his forum. I?m sure that number is many times higher now as this was several years ago when I read that.

You are going to meet a lot of tremendous Internet marketers when you do forum marketing. Some of these are going to become your friends, and some of them are going to be potential new business partners to make money with!

Certainly some of the people you meet will be customers, while you will become a customer of some of them yourself. And you?re going to continue to learn a tremendous amount about Internet marketing if you take the time to visit your favorite Internet marketing forum.

Internet marketing can get lonely at times. Anyone who?s spent countless hours in front of their computer screen can attest to the fact that sometimes it?s nice to have a little bit of human contact outside of email or visiting websites.

There are many tools available online to help make interacting with people easier. I personally use Skype all the time and it?s a great way to talk to people online through chatting and on the phone.

Hanging out in discussion forums is a good way to interact with people as well. One thing you are going to find is you relate to certain forum members better than you do others.

Sometimes it?s a personality thing, and others times its just finding people that you respect and want to interact with online. Forum marketing gives you this opportunity.

Another thing to consider is finding people who have strengths that you do not. For example, if you are good at marketing and weak in website design you might partner up with a website builder to develop projects together.

This is just one example of what I would consider to be the hidden benefit forum marketing. Give it a try. Find a forum relating to your Internet business, get involved in the discussions, and start making new friends and potential business partners.

Chinese spacecraft captured by Earthbound photographers

Skywatchers on the ground have spotted the Chinese Shenzhou 9 spacecraft, which has docked with the Tiangong 1 module, as it hurtled through the night sky.??

Skywatcher Stephen Mudge captured this photo of the Chinese Tiangong 1 and Shenzhou 9 spacecraft docked together over Brisbane, Australia last week.

Last week, Chinese astronauts docked two spacecraft together in orbit for the first, and now skywatchers on the ground have captured the scene.

Chinese spaceflyers Liu Yang, Jing Haipeng and Liu Wang launched June 16 on the?Shenzhou 9 spacecraft. Two days later, on June 18, the astronauts (known as taikonauts), docked their vehicle at the robotic Tiangong 1 module, which had been in orbit since last autumn.

The two craft have been orbiting Earth together since, with the astronauts ? including China's first female spaceflyer ? living and working onboard. From the ground, the docked Chinese vehicles look much like many other satellites, appearing as a swift-moving pinpoint of light passing across the sky.

Astrophotographer Stephen Mudge?photographed Shenzhou 9 and Tiangong 1?moving roughly 250 miles (400 kilometers) above Brisbane, Australia on June 20. His long-exposure photo shows the docked spacecraft as a bright streak across the otherwise static sky seen in the early morning hours. [How to See China's Shenzhou 6 in Night Sky]

Mudge had shot one of the Chinese spacecraft before. On March 31, before the Shenzhou 9 mission launched, the skywatcher caught a view of Tiangong 1 crossing overhead just five minutes apart from a pass of the International Space Station (ISS).

"The ISS went over first, followed five minutes later by China's Tiangong 1 station only a few degrees away from where the ISS had been," Mudge wrote in an email to SPACE.com.

The International Space Station is the $100 billion product of a collaboration between the United States, Russia, Europe, Japan and Canada. Tiangong 1 is much smaller, but it is the prototype module for China's goal of establishing a space station of its own by 2020.

Understanding the Journal Impact Factor Part Two

Despite its many faults (see?part I), the Journal Impact Factor (JIF) is considered an influential index to a journal?s quality, and publishing in high-impact journals is essential to a researcher?s academic career.

Reminder: to calculate, for example, the 2010 JIF for a journal -

JIF= (2010 citations to 2009+2008 articles)/(no. of ?citable? articles published in 2008+2009)

The JIF did start as a tool helping librarians with subscription decisions, but its influence among authors, readers and editors has increased with time, and so has the scientific community?s interest. More and more papers have been written about the JIF throughout the last thirty years (graph 1).

Graph 1: Number of papers on the JIF indexed in Web of Science, 1963?2006. (Archambault & Lariviere, 2009).

?

Different field, different JIF

JIFs vary widely with the discipline. Journals dealing specialized or applied areas will have, on average, lower JIFs than those in pure or fundamental areas (graph 2). The average number of article references correlates with the citation impact of each field. Biochemistry articles, for example, have twice as much citation than mathematics articles.

JIFs also correlate with the number of authors per article, because the more authors an article has, the better the chances it?ll be self-cited. A study of Lancet articles found that even among articles published in the same journal, the most-cited articles had on average 3-5 times more authors than the least cited articles. So the social sciences, with about two authors per article, have less citation impact than fundamental life sciences, with more than four authors per article. The arts and humanities journals? JIFs are quite pitiful, because scholars in those fields rarely cited journal articles. The highest 2010 JIF in the JCR Cultural Studies category is 0.867.

Subject Variation in Impact Factors

Graph 2: Subject Variation in Impact Factors (Amin & Mabe, 2007)

TR recently launched a new product, the Book Citation Index. It currently covers 30,000 books from publication year 2005 onwards, and 10,000 new books will be added every year. Of course, that means that all the book citations prior to 2005 will still go unnoticed, but at least it?s better than nothing, and we might finally see a bit of humanities coverage.

Drowning in a one-meter-deep (on average) pool.

When researchers publish in high-impact journals, even if their own articles are rarely cited, or not at all, they still enjoy the journals? prestige. It also works the other way around: a well-cited article can make JIFs considerably higher, especially in small journals. ?A study done on three biochemistry journals showed that 50% of the journals citations came from the 15% top-cited articles, and that the top half of the most cited articles were cited ten times as much as the lower half. Articles can be published in the same journal and have a completely different scientific impact (as measured by citations, of course).

The two-year citation window

The regular citation window of the JIF is two years. It favors fast-moving fields, where articles are cited quickly but also obsolesce fast. Journals in slower-moving fields, where citations don?t accumulate quite as fast, will have higher JIFs in longer time frames. ?If we look at the graph of the average JIFs for 200 chemistry journals (graph 3) we see that the five-year JIF curve is smoother, while the two-year curve varies widely. It means that journals with different two-year JIFs might have more similar impact over time.

?Letters? journals, where articles are usually short, tend to receive more citations within the two-year window. On the other hand, the accumulation of citations for review journals is slower. However, reviews tend to get so many citations that even the fraction of citations they get in the short citation window give review journals relatively high JIFs. Campanario (2011) compared two-year and five-year JIFs and found that a longer citation window increased the JIFs of about 72% of the journals, but lowered them for about 27%.

Graph 3: JIF measurement window fluctuations, 200+ Chemistry Journals (source: Amin & Mabe, 2007)

Self-citations

The debate about whether journal self-citations should be included in calculations of the JIF is an old one. Currently, self-citations aren?t excluded from JIFs, but journals with an exceedingly high level of self -citations are sometimes ?punished? and excluded from the index for a while. The rate of journal self-citations changes according to discipline and journal, but in general, it?s about 20%. If we?re talking about a specialized journal, the number might be higher. This is the reason why editors sometimes write editorials with dozens of self-citations?

In conclusion

The JIF is a crude index of a journal?s impact (I won?t go as far as to say quality). It was devised in a certain time in history for certain uses and, well, might have been blown out of proportions. Corrections have been suggested throughout the years, but most of them stayed in bibliometric journals rather than influence the general scientific community. Many researchers see the JIF as a definitive measure, but ?people have to remember that it?s is only one tool in the box of science measuring indices, and a journal JIF says very little of a single article, or researcher, quality. As Seglen (1997) said ?Evaluating scientific quality is a notoriously difficult problem which has no standard solution.?

RIM shares dive to 9-year low after downgrade

(AP) ? Shares of BlackBerry maker Research In Motion dove to a nine-year low Monday after Morgan Stanley downgraded the stock, saying RIM's challenges are piling up.

Research In Motion Ltd.'s shares closed down 75 cents, or 7.7 percent, to $9.11 on the Nasdaq. The bottom for the day was $9.01, the lowest level since 2003. RIM shares have lost 94 percent of their value since their 2008 peak.

Morgan Stanley's Ehud Gelblum predicted Monday that shares would fall further because the company is facing a "triple whammy" in the current quarter. He set a price target of $7 on the stock, below predictions of most Wall Street analysts.

Gelblum says the Canadian company's phones are aging, growth in the global smartphone market is slowing, and shipments are likely to decline ahead of the launch of phones with the radical new BlackBerry 10 software.

The Waterloo, Ontario, company has been struggling to adapt to a world where Apple Inc.'s iPhone sets the standard for how a smartphone should work, and its sales have plummeted.

Gelblum expects BlackBerry 10 to bomb, leading to a more rapid decline in BlackBerry sales than other analysts have projected. He believes the company will have $7 billion in sales in the next fiscal year, which begins in March 2013. Analysts polled by FactSet expect it to pull in $12 billion.

A message left with RIM seeking comment Monday was not immediately returned.

Like other analysts, Gelblum is valuing RIM based on the value of its parts, not as an earnings-producing whole. The real value of the company is below the sum-of-the-parts valuation, he wrote, because the company is not winding down and selling off its parts immediately. For example, RIM makes money from operating the BlackBerry email system. It also sits on patents potentially worth billions.

He thinks it will continue to lose money making BlackBerrys, bringing the value of the company below the $15.50 per share he calculates for the sum of the parts.

Goldman Sachs analyst Simona Jankowski provided a counterpoint, saying RIM's earnings are likely to drop significantly, but that will partly be counteracted by cuts in operating expenses. She reiterated a "Neutral" rating and a $13 price target on RIM's shares in a report published Sunday.

RIM is scheduled to report results for its latest quarter on Thursday.

Autism Expressed Helps Autistic Children Learn About The Internet

Screen shot 2012-06-24 at 12.25.39 PMThe internet is an incredibly powerful tool, but it's also a very dangerous place. Because of this, children with autism and other disabilities often can't leverage the power of the web, which is a place where you should be able to learn anything. But Autism Expressed, a startup we discovered on our TC Philly Mini Meetup, is looking to educate autistic children about the internet so that they can have a safe surfing experience and enjoy social media like the rest of us.

Beauty & Brains: Can a man really be friends with a woman?

Can a men really be friends with a woman??

I believe that you can be friends with any one even your ex's when your in a committed relationship.

You can only do this by setting boundaries, letting your friends, ex's and genders of the opposite sex know that you value your relationship and commitment to your love one.

How do you show someone that you value your partner?

By always talking about them in a good light,

By ending relationships with people who try to tempt you to cheat, lie and hurt the person your committed to.

By respecting them and communciating with them when someone else, trys to flirt, or talk to you sexually when their not around.

Anything you and your friends talk about should be a conversation you can ?have in front of your partner as well.

Example #1, if your ex said this : " I love you, and sometimes i reminsic about the times we spent together"

a correct response would be "Thank you, that is the past lets leave it there"

a wrong response would be " Really, I love you too, those where great times"

Don't agree with them, keep your feelings neutral. if your current partner heard you say this, that statement alone will make them feel insecure, jealous and make them feel like your in a relationship with them by default.

Example #2, your partner asks his female friend, "You want me to come lay in the bed next to you?"

a correct respond from his female friend would be, "No, you shouldn't joke like that. I don't want your girlfriend to get the wrong impression of me"

a wrong response from the female friend would be, "Yea, you can come lay with me lol"

This shows you partner that there's no boundaries in your friendship. That you will let your friend ?act as a girlfriend to you when she is not around. That you both dream about, holding each other intimately and cuddling. This will make your partner position in your life feel threaten and that you been thinking about your friend sexually.

Example #3, your male friend always calls you boo, baby, honey bun

a correct respond would be, 'to tell them to stop calling you those things"

a wrong response" To call them the names they call you"

The lesson learned here:

What you allow people follow. This means if you let some one flirt with you, talk to you inapproiate, or sexually without correcting it they will think this is okay.

Always acknowledge that you are in a relationship when talking to the opposite sex so they can have a clear view of what is not acceptable and what is

Don't entertain wrongful behavior

Stay neutral and build boundaries.

Philippines seizes illegal China-bound ore

Philippine authorities said Thursday they had seized a huge amount of iron ore intended to be smuggled to China, as part of a long-running battle against illegal miners.

The 50,000 tonnes of iron ore, believed to be worth more than $2 million, were found stockpiled near a private wharf at a coastal mining town in the eastern province of Camarines Norte, mines bureau head Leo Jasareno said.

"A cargo ship was seen anchored at a distance, and it was believed to be waiting for the ore to be loaded when the raid happened," Jasareno told AFP.

"The shipment was supposed to go to China and they were clearly intending to smuggle it out."

Jasareno said the ore was extracted illegally because the mining companies involved did not have a mineral export permit, adding one was suspected to be a front for a Chinese firm.

Initial estimates by the bureau's experts placed the shipment's value at $50 per metric tonne, or $2.5 million, he added.

The Chamber of Mines of the Philippines last year warned of Chinese companies using Filipino fronts to take advantage of a law reserving small-scale mining for locals.

The seizure last week came four months after the government deported eight Chinese nationals caught working illegally for a mining firm. More than 100 other Chinese have been detained for similar offences over the past two years.

In 2010, a diplomatic row broke out between Manila and Beijing after police detained but eventually freed 80 Chinese found working illegally at a mine site on the main island of Luzon.

The Philippines is believed to have some of the biggest mineral reserves in the world. The government estimates the country has at least $840 billion in gold, copper, nickel, chromite, manganese, silver and iron.

But the mining industry remains relatively small because of laws that discourage investment and a very strong anti-mining lobby led partly by the influential Catholic Church.

Bringing down the cost of fuel cells

Friday, June 22, 2012

Engineers at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (UWM) have identified a catalyst that provides the same level of efficiency in microbial fuel cells (MFCs) as the currently used platinum catalyst, but at 5% of the cost.

Since more than 60% of the investment in making microbial fuel cells is the cost of platinum, the discovery may lead to much more affordable energy conversion and storage devices.

The material ? nitrogen-enriched iron-carbon nanorods ? also has the potential to replace the platinum catalyst used in hydrogen-producing microbial electrolysis cells (MECs), which use organic matter to generate a possible alternative to fossil fuels.

"Fuel cells are capable of directly converting fuel into electricity," says UWM Professor Junhong Chen, who created the nanorods and is testing them with Assistant Professor Zhen (Jason) He. "With fuel cells, electrical power from renewable energy sources can be delivered where and when required, cleanly, efficiently and sustainably."

The scientists also found that the nanorod catalyst outperformed a graphene-based alternative being developed elsewhere. In fact, the pair tested the material against two other contenders to replace platinum and found the nanorods' performance consistently superior over a six-month period.

The nanorods have been proved stable and are scalable, says Chen, but more investigation is needed to determine how easily they can be mass-produced. More study is also required to determine the exact interaction responsible for the nanorods' performance.

The work was published in March in the journal Advanced Materials ("Nitrogen-Enriched Core-Shell Structured Fe/Fe3C-C Nanorods as Advanced Catalysts for Oxygen Reduction Reaction").

The right recipe

MFCs generate electricity while removing organic contaminants from wastewater. On the anode electrode of an MFC, colonies of bacteria feed on organic matter, releasing electrons that create a current as they break down the waste.

On the cathode side, the most important reaction in MFCs is the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Platinum speeds this slow reaction, increasing efficiency of the cell, but it is expensive.

Microbial electrolysis cells (MECs) are related to MFCs. However, instead of electricity, MECs produce hydrogen. In addition to harnessing microorganisms at the anode, MECS also use decomposition of organic matter and platinum in a catalytic process at their cathodes.

Chen and He's nanorods incorporate the best characteristics of other reactive materials, with nitrogen attached to the surface of the carbon rod and a core of iron carbide. Nitrogen's effectiveness at improving the carbon catalyst is already well known. Iron carbide, also known for its catalytic capabilities, interacts with the carbon on the rod surface, providing "communication" with the core. Also, the material's unique structure is optimal for electron transport, which is necessary for ORR.

When the nanorods were tested for potential use in MECs, the material did a better job than the graphene-based catalyst material, but it was still not as efficient as platinum.

"But it shows that there could be more diverse applications for this material, compared to graphene," says He. "And it gave us clues for why the nanorods performed differently in MECs."

Prosecution urges psychiatric care, insanity ruling, for Anders Breivik

The attacks at Norway's government headquarters and a youth summer camp would then not be considered acts of political terrorism, but the work of a blood-thirsty madman.

By Julia Gronnevet and Karl Ritter,?Associated Press / June 21, 2012

Anders Behring Breivik, the confessed gunman who killed 77 people last year in a bomb and shooting rampage (c.) is seated between his defense lawyers Geir Lippestad (l.) and Vibeke Hein Baera (r.) before prosecutors deliver their closing arguments in the court in Oslo Thursday June 21.

Prosecutors on Thursday asked a court to send confessed mass killer Anders BehringBreivik?to a mental institution instead of prison for his massacre of 77 people in a gun and shooting rampage.

If the court comes to the same conclusion when it issues its ruling, expected next month, it would mean thatBreivik?would avoid criminal responsibility for Norway's worst peacetime massacre.

The attacks at Norway's government headquarters and a youth summer camp would then not be considered acts of political terrorism, but the work of a blood-thirsty madman.

"We request that he is transferred to compulsory psychiatric care," prosecutor Svein Holden told the court in closing arguments.

Though there was conclusive evidence that?Breivik?was psychotic during the July 22 attacks, there were enough doubts about his sanity that he cannot be sentenced to prison under Norwegian law, Holden said.

The defense is likely to refute the insanity finding on Friday, the last day of the 10-week trial.?Breivik, who styles himself as an anti-Muslim militant, claims he is sane and that his attacks were motivated by his political views.

Just like when the trial stared in mid-April, the 33-year-old Norwegian flashed a clenched-fist salute with his right arm before he was led out of the court on Thursday.

Earlier in the trial,?Breivik?said the psychiatric dimension of the case was a way for Norwegian authorities to ridicule him and divert attention from his ideology.

Breivik?claims Norway and Europe are being colonized by Muslims, who make up about 2 percent of Norway's population. He has said he selected his targets ? a government high-rise and a summer camp for the governing Labor Party's youth organization ? to strike against the political forces he claims betrayed the country with liberal immigration policies.

Two teams of psychiatrists reached opposite conclusions about his mental health. The first team diagnosed him with "paranoid schizophrenia," a serious mental illness which would preclude a prison sentence. The second team found him legally sane, saying he suffers from a dissocial and narcissistic personality disorder, but is not psychotic.

Prosecutors said one of the key challenges to?Breivik's?sanity was his insistence of belonging to a militant anti-Muslim modeled after the Knights Templar, a Christian military order during the crusades, even though investigators have found no trace of the network.

Though?Breivik?tried to tone down the significance of the network during the trial, he maintained that it exists and that there are two other cells in Norway.

Ronny Cox on "Deliverance"'s 40th anniversary

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - Released in 1972 and starring a cast of up-and-coming actors that included Burt Reynolds, Ronnie Cox, Jon Voight and Ned Beatty, "Deliverance" thrilled audiences with its unflinching look at a canoe trip gone horribly wrong.

It earned an Oscar nomination for Best Picture and became one of the year's top-grossing films.

On the 40th anniversary of John Boorman's classic adventure nightmare, Cox - whose character Drew played guitar in the famous "Dueling Banjos" scene - has released a book, aptly titled "Dueling Banjos: The Deliverance of Drew" (Decent Hill), which recounts his experiences making the film.

It coincides with the June 26 release of a new Blu-ray edition of "Deliverance," which boasts hours of featurettes and a 42-page book with behind-the-scenes photos.

TheWrap talked to Cox about why the story of modern man versus the elements still resonates, Hollywood's propensity to remake his most famous films and how the real story behind that dueling banjos scene.

Q: You are a musician - did you actually play the guitar in the "Dueling Banjos" scene?

A: "I did not, sort of by my own choice, although I'm not nearly a good enough guitarist. Billy Redden, who played the banjo boy, could not play. He had another kid behind him working the strings."

"Since he was not able to play and we were going to just match the playback, I didn't want to miss a day of canoe practice to go off and record it. I had no idea that it was going to become this number one hit record. Because it's not me on the soundtrack, it probably cost me a gazillion dollars."

Q: When your character Drew's body is discovered, his arm is horribly mangled. That effect was not achieved with makeup.

A: "It was my real arm. That scene turns a lot of people's stomachs, but I had this light case of Polio as a child and I can do this thing where my shoulder comes out of place and just completely dislocates."

"I was in Georgia getting fitted for false eyeballs, because Drew was originally going to be discovered face up in the water, and I told Boorman that I could do this weird thing with my shoulder. Well, he almost fell down. He just thought it was the greatest thing and we later got credit for all this symbolism, but it was just a happy accident."

Q: Could a movie this brutal and uncompromising be made in today's Hollywood?

A: "It couldn't be made the way the film was made then. We did all that canoeing ourselves. With today's CGI, it would be done in a completely different way. That rape scene was so raw, in some ways, I don't know that films today would be able to pull that off."

Q: This was your first film. How did you ever get a gig like this right off the bat?

A: "It was Ned Beatty's first film too."

"It's unheard of. Boorman wanted to make the cast all unknowns, because he didn't want any character to be safe. If it's a big star, you know he's going to make it."

Q: Boorman did change the ages of the main characters, no? In James Dickey's novel they are in their 40s.

A: "He wanted to cast younger actors, not just because younger actors in their early thirties are sexier. In 1971, we were coming out of the Vietnam War and people in their forties were seen as part of the establishment, while people in their twenties were linked with the hippie movement."

"Boorman wanted to run it through the generation of guys in their thirties and that particular set of angst, because they didn't really belong anywhere. He thought they were the most screwed up psychologically and in the film it pays off in ways you can't imagine."

Q: Had you ever canoed before?

A: "None of us had, with one exception. The only guy who had been in a canoe was Ned, which was ironic because in the film he was supposed to be the biggest klutz."

"We did shoot the film in sequence, so after two weeks of canoe practice and being on the water 10 hours a day, we were pretty expert when we had to shoot on the rapids."

Q: A number of your films are being remade like "Total Recall" and "Robocop." How do you feel about that?

A: "I hate sequels and remakes. I thought both films were pretty well-realized, so I don't see the point in finding something good and just doing it again. Someone once said that doing a sequel is like putting on a wet bathing suit. Same is true with a remake."

Q: Why did you decide to write this book?

A: "It was my first film and it just changed my life. I've carried these stories with me for 40 years, and they just bubbled up to the surface."

"This book has no pretensions about being a literary tome, I'm a storyteller, and I wanted it to feel like we were having a coffee or a beer and talking about this complete novice who got to be in a number one Hollywood film."

Q: After four decades, why do you think "Deliverance" endures?

A: "When you look at this film, it has a sort of timelessness. It hasn't lost its power and the things it says about the world around us still resonate."

"None of the clothes scream period and the cars may be a bit older, but besides that it could be four guys out on a boat trip today."
