Important tips for diy home improvement projects - Dadka

by on June 28, 2012

So, you?ve decided to take it upon yourself to do a little bit of remodeling, eh? And not just moving a couch or a couple of pictures around, but a major project like perhaps creating a home theater room or installing some new countertops. Good for you.

Thanks to websites like YouTube, HGTV and DIY, it certainly makes things easier than it used to be. However, with every project comes a certain amount of risk. If you?re reading this article, the purpose of it is to prevent you from encountering the risk of an injury as it relates to your Do It Yourself home remodeling project. Chances are, if you follow these five tips, you should be well on your way to a job well (and safely) done:

Double-check your insurance. By law, every home is supposed to be insured, but when you?re going to be doing some remodeling, it?s a good idea to make sure that it covers all kinds of potential mishaps including loss, fire and personal injury claims.

Make sure you have a First Aid kit nearby. When you?re working around tools, sometimes boo-boos happen. Your kit should include some Band-Aids, gauzes, antiseptic, hydrogen peroxide and also a list of emergency numbers?just in case. Also, be sure to review all of the kinds of chemicals that you?ll be working with so that you can prevent yourself from any inhaling any harmful fumes (a face mask will usually do the trick).

Keep children and pets at a distance. Two of the most unpredictable creatures on the earth are children and pets. They are also two of the busiest and most curious, all of which are a potentially dangerous combination when it comes to doing house projects. If your kids are older and you feel like there are some assignment that they could handle that could be of assistance to you, that?s fine. But when it comes to the younger kids and your dog or cat, it?s best to either work when they?re asleep, outside or visiting elsewhere.

Attend to all of your power tools. It?s understandable why in the midst of the project, you might find yourself feeling a bit overwhelmed and need to take a break. Just make sure that when you do, you turn off all of the electric tools that you are using. Leaving one unattended (and on) is a surefire way to either mess up the surface that the tool is sitting on or to harm someone that?s unsuspectingly walking by.

Thoroughly read and follow the instructions. When it comes to DIY home projects, the greatest cause of personal injury is probably related to this one: not reading or following the instructions all of the way through. A house project is not like a food recipe. When you?re cooking, you might be able to improvise a bit and still have things turn out OK. Not so much with house jobs. The fact that you?re doing it yourself is reason enough to feel proud. Don?t put you or someone else in potential physical danger by thinking that it?s cool to edit some of the instructions. Nine times out of 10, it?s not. Go step-by-step. That?s the best way to come up with the end result that you?re looking for.
