Injury inflicted on the body is a very common type of personal injury referred to as physical injury. Personal injury, being a broad legal term, encompasses beyond the physical aspects, in addition it pertains to burden and suffering caused by emotional and mental forms of abuse. Inside of the legal proceedings, this falls within a kind of tort lawsuit suggesting that the injury is brought on by another persons negligence. Defamation torts are also a common ground for this lawsuit.
Types and causes of personal injury
Personal injury claims are accidental in nature. The most common types include traffic accidents. This particular injury is the result of possible negligence of traffic signs and insufficient driver training. At work or in the home, accidents induced by workers or members of the family may also happen which can be as simple as a tripping accident.
More serious types include product liability which can often severely impact the suspected company negatively. Assault claims which happen commonly in the streets or even in the bars are likewise quite common. In the professional world, medical and dental accidents resulting in medical negligence claims are classified as the most commonly seen among professions. Cases of industrial disease brought on by company working conditions are also filed in large number each and every year.
Seeking assistance from personal injury attorneys
Personal injury attorneys legally represent complainants who claim to experience physical or psychological injury as a result of negligence or error done by another individual or entity. When hired, attorneys under this area of law have responsibilities encompassing ethical and professional rules. Such responsibilities include filing of legal complaints, arguing cases in court, and offer legal counsel to plaintiffs. Legal documents that happen to be extremely important in the courtroom proceedings also need to be drafted by the same lawyer.
Lawyers who are experts in this area are hired from a personal injury law practice. They commence their service by interviewing prospective clients. During the interview, they have to evaluate the case to classify the legal matter. The attorney should then determine the particular points that collectively build up to be the real problem. With all of these preliminary procedures down, he then begins the extensive research about every issue all around the legal matter to generate a strong case.
What to expect from a personal injury case
Known as the no win, no fee agreement, conditional fees are imposed between the lawyer and his client. If an aircraft accident lawyer, for instance, failed to support his client of negligence claims against the airline company, than the Conditional Fee Agreement applies. In any losing case, therefore, the client will not be paying the lawyer for his services. However, in the event the lawyer wins the case, then he is granted the standard fee with an additional uplift referred to as success fee.

Finding a job can be a tough task at the best of times. Right now, it's harder than ever - job cuts, lay-offs and mass redundancies mean the job market is more competitive and has more candidates, too.
We may all be in it together when it comes to the financial crisis, but when it comes to job hunting, you're on your own.
The process of finding employment can generally be separated into three stages: find a position, apply for it, and then perform at the interview. In many cases, simply finding vacancies is the hardest part of the job hunt.
Tracking down the perfect position is, in all likelihood, the most time-consuming and dullest part of the process. Once you've found the perfect job with a dream salary at a company you like the look of, you need to create the perfect curriculum vitae; a document that impresses both visually and through its content is essential if you're to make it to the interview.
Happily, your iPad or your iPhone can help you at all three stages of the job hunt. There are apps to help you find the right position, and apps to design the best CV too. If the interview stage isn't your strong point, however, there are even apps available to help you build up your confidence.
In short, there's every possible app to help you along the path to a new or more exciting career, and we've structured our tips in this chronological order to help you with the process.
1. Jobcentreplus
Access nationwide job listings, all for free, with this official app
Price: Free Works with: iPhone, iPod touch
Finding out what positions are out there is step one in the job-hunting process, and where better to start than the Job Centre?
The Jobcentreplus app allows you to search all the vacancies at every Job Centre nationwide, giving you access to a huge number of positions.
There are three main ways to search for a vacancy. First, you can use a search term and define a place - so, if you're looking for sales jobs in Bath, enter those details and tap on Search.
Second, you can use the location capabilities of your iPhone to simply search for jobs in your current vicinity. Finally, you can browse jobs by category; if you really want to be a butcher, for example, tap on the job title and search for all the positions near you.
If you're not fussy about your role, you can just search for every job close by, but naturally this returns far too many results to be wholly useful. We really liked the favourites function that allows you to quickly collect a number of job ads to read in more detail at your leisure.
Also, the number of preferences and options available that enable you to refine your job search and really dig out your perfect role impressed us, too. In short, using this official app is generally much less stress than visiting a real Job Centre, yet with all the same opportunities on offer.
2. Pocket CV
Build and distribute a stunning r?sum? with this simple tool
Making a r?sum? that really sells you and your talents can be both tricky and tedious. You need to make sure that you've put everything a prospective employer would need to know in an easy-to-follow layout, preferably on no more than two sides of A4.
Pocket CV is designed to help you do just that; it splits your CV into seven sections, and you simply fill in each one. Then tap Preview to see what your new CV looks like. It really couldn't be easier.
Although this is a universal app, it's notably easier to use it effectively with the iPad's larger screen. If you have a LinkedIn account, you can import all the data from that to help build your CV, too.
Obviously, the more information you have on your LinkedIn profile, the better your CV will look, but even if you just use the bare data, it's an excellent starting point. You can build as many different r?sum?s as you choose, and there are eight different design formats to choose from. They're not the most contemporary of layouts, but neither are they offensively ugly.
Once everything's designed and you're ready to roll, you can email a CV directly from the app, or copy it to Dropbox for further editing on a computer if needed.
3. Monster Jobs for iPad
A job search tool from one of the largest and best-known job sites
Price: Free Works with: iPad
The Monster website has been going for many years now, and is one of the most popular job search tools in the UK. You could, naturally, use Safari on your iPad to look for jobs on the site directly, but as with many specialist apps, the Monster Jobs iPad app gives you a more polished and simpler method of looking through its listings.
The search tool enables you to look for roles by keyword and location, and you can also change countries if you're after a job somewhere else in the world. You can save jobs to view at a later date, and see all the positions you've already applied for.
There are a number of filters to help you narrow down your choices and you can store your regular searches. If you think you may have found the perfect role for someone else, you can share it using email from within the app, too.
If you have a Monster account set up, you can log in and get access to all your CVs and covering letters, so that you can apply directly from the app. While you can't create a CV in the app, you can get started on a covering letter.
4. CV-Library HD
Search for jobs and create a CV quickly, all from one app
Price: Free Works with: iPad
CV-Library HD claims to have more than 50,000 real-time jobs available to search and apply for when you're on the go. There are over 4.7 million registered users, the service offers a free CV review when you register, and it has a selection of featured recruiters from more than 70 industries.
When we ran our searches there were more than 5,000 IT jobs, over 2,000 management positions and just shy of 3,000 admin vacancies waiting to be filled. CV-Library HD gives you instant access to all these positions. In addition, you can link the iPad app to the company's website and use it to apply for jobs, save your most popular searches and share job adverts with your friends.
The app uses the iPad screen real estate very well, with jobs to the left in an easy-to-scroll column, and role information (such as location, salary and description) given plenty of space to the right. That might sound like a small thing, but some of the other job search apps, presenting much the same information, aren't as clear.
The design of the app really does make it easier to trawl through a large number of results to find the perfect job, especially with other features.
5. ResuM8
Build a professional and outstanding CV with this easy five-step plan
Price: Free Works with: iPhone, iPod touch, iPad
Creating your own CV can be a bit of a pain. How do you describe what you're good at? How do you say it without sounding pretentious and putting potential employers off? Well, ResuM8 is here to help.
This app helps you to put together a CV in stages. Though ResuM8 is free, it doesn't really function properly without buying the database of headlines as an In-App Purchase. For ?1.99 you get access to 400 bulleted 'Strengths' that you can use in your C.V. This is great if you struggle to sum up ways to describe what you do, and what you're good at.
Inevitably, some of the Strengths are a touch corny, though you can change them if you prefer. The app could do with a bit of spit and polish in the design department too, but it's perfectly accomplished for creating a quick-fire CV.
Once you've created one, you can send it as a PDF or RTF file and can attach a covering letter, too. There's a short introduction explaining the reasoning behind the ResuM8 method, which is worth a quick read, and you can create a CV without a paying a penny if you really want to - so at least you can check the app out for free.
6. Jobsite Jobs
An appropriately named app for searching though vacancies
Price: Free Works with: iPhone, iPod touch
Jobsite Jobs is a handy iPhone frontend to the many thousands of roles available on jobsite.co.uk. You can search by keyword and place, as well as using location services to let you see what vacancies are nearby. You can narrow your search to include jobs advertised in the last few hours, or widen it to all roles posted in the last seven days. You can also set the search distance up to a 50 mile radius.
Finally, you can choose to exclude temporary, part-time or contract jobs - or search only for those types if you like. Results can be ordered by relevance to your search terms, date posted, or salary, and searches can be saved to make it easier to re-run the query at a later date.
Although there are promoted jobs within the app, the one we clicked on was outof- date, somwhat annoyingly. If you have a Jobsite account, you can create a shortlist of roles for later. Once you've uploaded your CV, you can also quickly apply for any role.
7. Interview Questions Pro
No need to be fearful about the nerve-jangling interview process?
Price: 69p / 99? Works with: iPhone, iPod touch, iPad
Once you've found a job and created a compelling CV that has employers clambering over each other to see you in person, you still need to perfect your interview skills if you want that coveted position. Interview Questions Pro splits practice questions into sections, covering critical thinking, work history, behavioural aspects, and you - the candidate.
There's also a selection of suggested questions for you to ask a potential employer. Simply tap on a section to get started with the sample questions. You can begin at question number one and work your way though, or simply pick out the questions at random.
Tap on the question to flip the flash card to reveal the sort of thing you're supposed to be saying. The app doesn't give you a word-for-word answer, of course, but instead points you in the general direction. You can add your own questions for more personalised interview practice too, if you want.
8. Resume Designer
A simple template tool for creating the perfect CV on the go
Price: ?1.99 / $2.99 Works with: iPhone, iPod touch, iPad
Resume Designer is a basic app that lets you make your own CV very easily. All you have to do is type the relevant information into a template to create a document.
There are five default r?sum? sections on the basic template, such as Objectives and Work Experience. All you have to do is tap on a section and fill in the details. A persistent preview below each entry shows you exactly what your changes look like as they happen.
If the sections don't suit or you need to add another, you can, including Skills and Volunteer Experience, or you can create a custom section. In addition, you can add an events section to make a list of significant events to be shown in order.
Once you've finished, you can email or print the CV from the app. There's no control over the fonts or colours, but this is still a great app for creating a good-looking document quickly.
9. Interview Skills
An app designed to demystify the interview process
Price: Free Works with: iPhone, iPod touch
The Interview Skills app from Barclays Capital is ostensibly designed to help candidates prepare for an interview solely with Barclays, but its useful advice and videos make it great for any candidate. This app revolves around three fictional candidates and their answers to four interview questions - motivation, business awareness, competency and role. You listen to their answers and decide which one is strongest.
This is handy as it puts you in the position of interviewer and allows you to decide first-hand which answers are most suitable. Rating the interview answers is a fun way to pick out the pitfalls when in an interview.
As well as this useful game, there's a whole section of hints and tips to help you answer interview questions, including videos of helpful advice from the people who devise and run interviews at Barclays.
10. LinkedIn
The business social network that lets you hunt down your next position
Price: Free Works with: iPhone, iPod touch, iPad
With LinkedIn you can build a virtual CV, but also, just like Facebook, keep in touch with ex-work colleagues. Once you've created a profile and made contacts, you can request recommendations from others you may have worked for or with, and search out the movers and shakers.
On the iPad, the app has the useful feature of being able to see who has looked at your profile recently too. Additionally, you can see updates from people in your industry, and join LinkedIn groups to keep up on the latest news or job openings.
Of course, you can add your own updates. You can use the Updates section to see what everyone is doing, or use the People You May Know to help your business profile grow.
See which of your contacts has been promoted or joined another company, or use it to do research on a company you feel you might want to join.

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? A few months ago, Time Warner Cable Inc. was crying foul at the high price it had to pay to air Knicks and Rangers games in New York. Now, the shoe is on the other foot.
The nation's No. 4 TV distributor bought the regional TV rights for the Los Angeles Lakers and pro soccer's LA Galaxy last year for an estimated $3 billion over 20 years. It's launching two new channels based on those rights on Monday. To help pay for them, it is demanding payment from other TV distributors like Dish Network Corp. and DirecTV.
Time Warner Cable is asking as much as $3.95 per subscriber per month from competitors in the L.A. area, said a person familiar with the situation. The person requested anonymity because the negotiations are confidential and the details were not yet final.
That would make it the second most expensive regional sports network in the nation behind Comcast SportsNet Washington, which charges $4.02 per subscriber per month, according to research firm SNL Kagan.
It hasn't secured deals yet and likely won't until the regular season starts on Oct. 30.
"We think the price we're asking our distribution partners to pay is one of the better value propositions out there," said Mark Shuken, senior vice president for TWC Sports Regional Networks. Shuken declined to discuss the rates Time Warner is seeking.
Bob Toevs, a spokesman for Dish, confirmed that talks are ongoing, but said "it will have to be a good value for us and, most importantly, for our customers." DirecTV said in a statement that it is "very engaged" in talks to carry the channels, but said it has a responsibility to its customers to "avoid any extraordinary increases" in their monthly bills.
The main reason to buy the rights is to contain rising sports costs, Shuken said. It's better to be a rights buyer, he said, rather than to haggle with other channel operators and be subject to "big bumps" in prices every few years.
That makes sense, according to Tom Eagan, an analyst with Canaccord Genuity, who estimates the deal will be break-even or slightly positive in the end, but give the company more certainty about its future costs.
"I think we've all been consistently amazed by the increasing costs of sports," Eagan said. "I think Time Warner Cable feels there's some value to owning the rights and the actual channels as well."
Time Warner Cable will bear production costs and has spent money on a new studio in the suburb of El Segundo. It has hired familiar on-air talent like former Laker James Worthy and reporter Chris McGee, who worked the sideline for Fox Sports West, which carried most of the Lakers' home games for more than a decade before this deal.
Offsetting those costs, Time Warner Cable will gain revenue by selling commercial time and the channels ? Time Warner Cable Sportsnet and the Spanish-language Time Warner Cable Deportes ? to other TV providers.
It's not unusual for a TV distributor to get into the business of buying sports rights directly.
Comcast Corp., the nation's largest TV provider, operates 11 regional sports networks, including one in Houston that will be the exclusive home of the NBA's Houston Rockets and also launches Monday. SNL's Kagan said there are about 40 regional sports networks across the country. Many are owned by cable TV companies.
Assuming that deals are reached with all of its competitors, the new Lakers channels will be available to almost all of the 4.8 million people who already pay for TV in Los Angeles, including the 1.7 million who get service through Time Warner Cable.
But Los Angeles also has around 686,000 homes that get their TV signals for free via antenna, the highest number of any market in the nation, according to SNL data.
That means that fans who were used to watching Lakers' away games for free on KCAL 9, a CBS Corp. TV station, will now have to pay for TV from a provider that carries the channel. Either that or hit the local sports bar when the Lakers are out of town

BELGRADE, Serbia (AP) ? On a bright autumn day, Renato Grbic was out fishing on the Danube with his brother when he heard a big splash. At first, he thought somebody had thrown something off the bridge.
Then he saw a man flailing in the water.
"We hurried and pulled the man out," Grbic recalls. "I remember telling him: Such a glorious day and you want to kill yourself!"
It was the first time Grbic saved a life. From that day 15 year ago, his own life would never be the same. The bright-eyed, tattooed restaurant owner from a shabby industrial zone on the outskirts of Belgrade has rescued 25 people who tried to kill themselves by jumping off the tall bridge over the Danube.
Always on alert in his little wooden motor boat, the burly 51-year-old has pulled people out of the river's muddy waters without asking for anything in return.
"I couldn't turn my back on them," Grbic said. "They are desperate people."
Grbic has been dubbed the "Superman of the Danube" by his admirers and awarded a hero's plaque by Belgrade city authorities. But even "Superman" can't save everybody who jumps off the 18-meter- (60-foot-) high bridge: At least as many as he had saved have killed themselves at the spot since Grbic's first rescue.
"When I hear that someone has jumped and I wasn't there I really feel bad," he said. "My eyes are always on the bridge."
The Pancevo bridge became a favored suicide spot because it's Belgrade's only bridge over the Danube, which is bigger and colder and has stronger underwater currents than the city's other river, the Sava.
The first person Grbic pulled out of the Danube turned out to be mental patient. Grbic took him ashore, gave him dry clothes, hot tea and cigarettes. Later, an ambulance came and took the man away.
"That was it," Grbic says. "He didn't speak, they never do."
Over the years, Grbic has rescued men and women of all ages and social backgrounds. Grbic remembers them all, but "they never return or call, they hardly ever say thank you."
Goran Penev, a researcher with Serbia's Institute of Social Sciences, said Serbia's suicide rate is at the upper side of the European average. Penev noted there was a sharp rise in the early 1990s, at the beginning of the wars in the former Yugoslavia, but the situation has been relatively stable ever since. In 2011, nearly 1,300 people in Serbia ? a country of 7 million people ? took their lives.
Grbic has found that some of the people he rescued suffered from cancer or other terminal illnesses, while others cited poverty or unrequited love.
All, he said, felt lonely.
"It is a cry for help," he said. "They often do it in daytime so they would be seen, they want attention, love."
Only a couple weeks ago, a 22-year-old girl threw herself off the bridge near Grbic's restaurant. He was there to pick her up and ask: "Why did you do it?"
"For my boyfriend," she replied. "Do you think he would do it for you?" he asked in return.
Grbic said the girl was conscious and clear-minded when he plucked her out of the water. In winter, however, it is a question of minutes before people will lose consciousness in the freezing Danube and drown.
On one of those days, in mid-January about seven years ago, Grbic was just preparing to turn his boat to the shore and go home ? when he heard a scream.
An 18-year-old woman going through a mental crisis had burst out of her parents' car at the bridge, taken off her jacket and jumped, shouting: "Goodbye mom!"
Grbic said something had made him stick around: "It was a very windy day, a few minutes later and I would have gone."
The girl, Grbic said, is the only one who has stayed in touch.
Every January she comes to his fish restaurant to celebrate her "second birthday." She is married now and has a child. Grbic was invited to the wedding reception.
"My heart leaps every time I see her," he said.
Grbic has little or no track of the others he saved. It would be nice, he says, if they came to tell him how they were over a brandy at his restaurant.
"I gave them a second chance and it was up to them to use it well."

ScienceDaily (Sep. 27, 2012) ? Researchers of motor neuron diseases have long had a hunch that two fatal diseases, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and spinal muscular atrophy (SMA), might somehow be linked. A new study confirms that this link exists.
"Our study is the first to link the two diseases on a molecular level in human cells," said Robin Reed, Harvard Medical School professor of cell biology and lead investigator of the study.
The results will be published online in the September 27 issue of Cell Reports. ALS, or Lou Gehrig's disease, which has an adult onset, affects neurons that control voluntary muscles. As a result, muscles start to weaken, and patients eventually lose the ability to move their arms, legs and other parts of the body. In contrast, patients who have SMA tend to be infants and young children. Symptoms are similar to ALS, with lack of ability to control muscles being the major symptom. In both diseases, the most common cause of death is the loss of muscle function in the chest, resulting in respiratory failure.
Previous studies have shown that one of the causes of ALS is mutation of the FUS gene, and that a deficiency in the survival of motor neuron (SMN) protein causes SMA disease. The SMN protein is present in bodies in the nucleus known as Gemini of Coiled Bodies, or gems. Reed's lab connected the FUS protein to the SMN protein and the formation of gems in cellular nuclei.
"Nobody really knows what the function of gems are," said Reed. "The consensus so far is that they might be involved in biogenesis of crucial nuclear RNAs."
The researchers arrived at this pathway by studying human fibroblasts, cells that form the basis of connective tissue. "Unlike other studies of ALS and SMA, in which post-mortem tissue is normally used, we used fibroblasts from patients. These cells are easily accessible because they can be obtained from patients' skin and may provide a better idea of what happens in the human body," said Reed.
Reed and colleagues began the study by showing that the FUS protein is essential for normal gem levels. Without it, gem levels in ALS fibroblasts are much lower than in control fibroblasts.
This feature of ALS fibroblasts led the team to connect the disease with SMA. Previous studies had shown that when cells were deficient in SMN protein, fibroblasts also lacked gems in the nuclei. The loss of gems as a final result in both the SMA and ALS pathways led Reed and her team to believe that they might, in fact, be part of one larger pathway.
"The question now is whether the loss of gems is a cause of the disease or a marker for the disease," said Reed.
Reed is hopeful that even if the loss of gems is a marker, it could be used as a diagnostic tool to determine if someone who is presenting symptoms has ALS. "We will need to find out if the loss of gems is applicable to all cases of ALS or if it is specific to ALS patients with mutations in the FUS gene," added Reed.
Either way, Reed describes these finds as killing two birds with one stone. "This common pathway may mean common treatment and resources."

SEATTLE (AP) ? Since taking on the rebuilding of Washington's program, no loss seemed more disheartening to Steve Sarkisian than the beating provided by Stanford a year ago.
Sarkisian and his Huskies got their redemption Thursday night.
Kasen Williams took a quick screen pass from Keith Price, broke a tackle at the line of scrimmage and raced 35 yards for the go-ahead score with 4:53 left, and Washington rallied from 10 points down to stun No. 8 Stanford 17-13.
"That's a win for our program," Sarkisian said. "I thought all along that this was a unique group that we had; a resilient group, a very serious tough-minded group."
Trailing 13-3 late in the third quarter, the Huskies (3-1, 1-0 Pac-12) got a 61-yard touchdown sprint from running back Bishop Sankey on fourth-and-1 for their first offensive touchdown against an FBS opponent since the first quarter of the opener against San Diego State.
Then Washington put together a nine-play drive that included another fourth-down conversion and was capped by Williams' catch-and-run that gave the Huskies their first lead.
It was Washington's first win over a top-10 opponent since its upset of then-No. 3 USC back in 2009, Sarkisian's first season at Washington. And it was thanks to an inspired defensive effort that was the opposite of a year ago when Stanford (3-1, 1-1) bulldozed the Huskies to the tune of 446 yards rushing and 65 points.
"It's a unique challenge when you're playing Stanford just because of all the big bodies," Sarkisian said. "I'm just impressed by the guys' discipline in the way they played tonight."
Meanwhile, it took almost a month, but Stanford finally felt the sting of not having Andrew Luck roaming The Farm anymore.
Yet no one expected Washington to provide the hurt.
The Cardinal were riding high following their upset of then-No. 2 USC on Sept. 15. Yet Josh Nunes, Luck's replacement, and the Stanford offense was held without a touchdown against the same defense it steamrolled a year ago.
Stanford went more than 21 minutes of the first half without gaining a first down and Nunes failed to lead a winning drive in the closing minutes. Stanford finished with just 235 yards of total offense, the fewest yards allowed by Washington since the 2010 Holiday Bowl against Nebraska and the fewest for Stanford since 2008 against TCU.
The Cardinal were also held without an offensive touchdown for the first time since Oct. 27, 2007 at Oregon State, a 23-6 Stanford loss.
Stanford finished 5 of 18 on third downs and had only one drive of longer than 50 yards. Nunes finished 18 of 37 for 170 yards. But the most important factor was Washington's ability to control Stanford running back Stepfan Taylor.
Last year, Taylor ran for 138 yards against Washington and had 153 yards rushing in the upset of USC. He finished with 75 yards on 21 carries, none of them longer than 7 yards.
"We didn't play well enough to win," Stanford coach David Shaw said. "We didn't make the throws we needed to make. We didn't make the catches we needed to make. We didn't sustain our blocks in the running game as long as we should have. We got outplayed tonight."
Washington's student section poured onto the turf of CenturyLink Field after Price took a knee for the final time. It was a crucial win for the Huskies in the first game of a schedule that only gets tougher next week at No. 2 Oregon before returning home to host No. 13 USC.
Price finished 19 of 37 for 177 yards and the touchdown toss to Williams. Sankey had 144 yards on 20 carries after Stanford's defense had allowed just 124 yards rushing combined in the first three games of the season.
Washington started its winning drive at the 35 with 8:57 left and converted on fourth-and-1 at their own 44 with Dezden Petty bulling for 2 yards.
They eventually got down the Stanford 35 with 5 minutes remaining. That's when Sarkisian called for the quick screen to his star receiver. Williams broke the tackle of Terrence Brown at the line of scrimmage then sprinted down the sideline ahead of safety Ed Reynolds, who caught up enough to knock the ball loose but only after Williams had crossed the goal line.
"I put my head down, I think that's one of my strengths is putting my head down and fighting through tackles and that's what happened on that play," Williams said.
Stanford, which scored its touchdown on Trent Murphy's 40-yard interception return in the third quarter, tried to put together one last drive.
Ty Montgomery dropped a potential touchdown at the Washington 5 and Stanford eventually faced fourth-and-4 at the Huskies' 34 with 2 minutes left. With the defense spread out, Nunes tried to throw a fade route down the sideline to 6-foot-8 tight end Levine Toilolo. But the ball was poorly thrown and Desmond Trufant was in position to intercept the pass at the 8 with 1:46 left.
Stanford used its final two timeouts to force third-and-4, but Ben Gardner jumped offside to give the Huskies a first down and the clock ran out.
"I've lost to Stanford every time since I've been here. It's great to be on the other side this time," Trufant said.

Dale Perry?s Breast Cancer Recovery Story - Perry was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2009. She had right mastectomy, with reconstruction and all lymph nodes removed. She also had 6 rounds of chemotherapy and 30 days of radiation. She started physical therapy within the first month after her last surgery. With physical therapy, Perry increased her range of motion, but still had numbness in the radiated area. ?In January of 2012, she noticed swelling of the right hand and early signs of lymphedema.? A customized therapeutic exercise program, developed with Cheng on the Power Plate system, in combination with a customized nutraceutical program featuring antioxidants, resulted in a decrease the swelling within a month. When she saw her oncologist and physical therapist, they also noted the significant decrease in swelling. Perry now has full use of her arm and the swelling has been resolved for over 8 months.? The current treatment protocols for lymphedema focus on the use of mechanical, external tools and techniques, such as compression sleeves, massage, and pumps.? Available research describes the condition as irrevocable.? Perry?s results represent hope for thousands of breast cancer survivors who suffer with lymphedema.
?Both my physical therapist and oncologist are blown away by the results that I?m getting,? says Perry, ?It?s very exciting to share this program so we can help more people.?
Strength After Cancer Pilot Program - Strength After Cancer is currently launching a pilot program for breast cancer and lymphedema to replicate Perry?s results with a larger test group of breast cancer survivors.? While the fitness component of the program is based specifically in the Los Angeles area, the nutrition and weight loss programs serve anyone in the United States.? The Targus Ultralife Wireless Mouse ($49.99 direct) attempts to fuse fashion and technology and, to a certain extent, succeeds on both levels. It definitely makes a loud, albeit curious, stylistic statement, sporting a sleek, bronze-finished chassis with a circular hole piercing the body. On the "technology" side of the equation, though, that loud statement is reduced to a soft whimper. Its low profile fits awkwardly in the hand, and, for an otherwise ordinary mouse with standard functionality, its $50 price tag is difficult to justify in the face of equally versatile, more affordable mice.
Design and Features
The Ultralife's sleek, low profile body is tastefully minimalist in appearance, though not pared down as dramatically as the Manhattan Stealth Touch Mouse . The left- and right- click buttons are integrated into the handsome bronze-finished chassis, and lends an overall streamlined look to the Ultralife. Aside from the tiny scroll wheel and an etched Targus insignia, the face of the Ultralife is entirely unadorned. A battery indicator life beneath the scroll wheel flashes red whenever the battery levels dip too low, but it's only visible through the thin slit that separates the left- and right- click buttons. The underside, meanwhile, is constructed out of black plastic, and there you'll find a power switch, two glide strips that allow smooth movement on most surfaces, a battery compartment for one AA battery (one is included), and a magnetic strip that attracts the dongle when you take the Ultralife on the go. The magnetic holder is a good idea, at least in theory, though not as practical as a dongle compartment, and, one can easily imagine the dongle becoming dislodged whenever the Ultralife is tossed into a backpack. By far the most curious aspect of the Ultralife's design is the hole on the lower right side of the mouse, which pierces the chassis and exposes the surface beneath the mouse, bringing to mind a pierced earlobe. Maybe the hole represents the emptiness of modern life. Or maybe the Ultralife can be used ironically as a keychain. Either way, it's an interesting piece of flair that ultimately doesn't affect performance and is highly subjective, so make of it what you will.
The Ultralife is compatible with Windows (Windows 7, Vista, and XP). It's also compatible with the upcoming Windows 8 operating system, as I was able to use it on a system with Windows 8 Release Preview installed, and found that the scroll wheel scrolls through tiled interface of the start screen. Unlike the HP Wireless Mouse X4000 , it's also compatible with Mac operating systems.
Performance
Measuring 0.8 by 2.25 by 4 inches (HWD), the Ultralife has a thin profile that matches the ultrabook aesthetic. It's a cool design, but an ergonomically questionable call. My hand had to assume an awkward claw-like position during use, since resting it on the Ultralife resulted in a five-finger drag. That said, the Ultralife deserves props for its ambidextrous design that can accommodate righties and lefties unlike, say, the HP Wi-Fi Touch Mouse X7000 .
The Ultralife connects wirelessly through a dongle that beams out a 2.4GHz signal. Since it's plug-and-play, setting it up simply requires plugging the dongle into a free USB port and waiting for several moments as the drivers are installed. If your system has a limited number of available USB ports, as is often the case with ultrabooks, you may be better off with a mouse that features Bluetooth connectivity, like the Verbatim Easy Riser Bluetooth Notebook Laser Mouse .
Aside from its ergonomic hang-ups, the Ultralife is a decent performer. Its 1200 DPI laser sensor ensures smooth movement, even on higher resolution displays, and the left- and right- clicks as well as the scroll wheel don't feel stiff. Response rate is also on point, and there's no noticeable lag during use.
The Targus Ultralife Wireless Mouse is one of the more interesting-looking mice you'll encounter. That's not to say that it's unattractive?it just may not be everyone's cup of tea. Still, its low profile makes for an awkward user experience. That, and its standard functionality, makes it pretty difficult to justify its $50 price tag.
COMPARISON TABLE Compare the Targus Ultralife Wireless Mouse with several other computer mice side by side.

What all this implies is that parents really should seriously see the effectiveness of blocks in a child?s early learning and advancement stage. The educational designs increase a child?s intellectuals. There are numerous sorts of products offered today in the marketplace. In brief, each and every age group does have a matching set. So, he or she may possibly lose interest in it later on if you get a set now for a tiny infant.

President Barack Obama has stretched his lead over Republican nominee Mitt Romney in battleground states Ohio and Florida and retains a 12-point lead in Pennsylvania, according to a Quinnipiac University/New York Times/CBS poll released Wednesday.
The president is ahead 53 to 43 percent in Ohio and 53 to 44 percent in Florida, according to surveys of likely voters conducted Sept. 18-24. In Pennsylvania, Obama leads 54-42 percent.
Peter A. Brown, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute, attributed the swing in Obama's favor to negative media coverage of Romney over the past few weeks but said the Republican nominee still has time to reverse the president's lead.
"Gov. Mitt Romney had a bad week in the media and it shows in these key swing states," Brown said. "The furor over his 47 percent remark almost certainly is a major factor in the roughly double-digit leads President Barack Obama has in Florida, Ohio and Pennsylvania. The debates may be Romney's best chance to reverse the trend in his favor."
If national electorate models hold, Florida and Ohio will be crucial for Romney to reach the 270 Electoral College votes needed to best Obama on Election Day. According to the Quinnipiac University poll, Romney continues to struggle with female voters, who favor Obama by 19 percentage points in Florida, 25 percentage points in Ohio and 21 percentage points in Pennsylvania. The surveys in Ohio and Pennsylvania have a margin of error of plus or minus 2.9 percent and plus or minus 2.8 percent in Florida.
Other recent polls, however, show closer races in these battleground states. A Mason-Dixon survey unveiled Sunday and conducted Sept. 17-19 showed a statistical tie between Obama and Romney in Florida. According a recent Washington Post poll, Obama leads by 8 percentage points in Ohio and 4 percentage points in Florida.
Bill is Among Several Animal Protection Measures Approved into Law
The Humane Society of the United States applauds California Gov. Jerry Brown for signing into law a bipartisan bill that will end the inhumane and unsporting practice of using dogs to chase down bears and bobcats for trophy hunting. He also signed five other important animal protection bills into law, reinforcing California?s standing as a national leader in animal protection.
Senate Bill 1221, authored by Sen. Ted W. Lieu, D-Torrance, makes California the 15th state to prohibit the ?hounding? of bears.
?The curtain will soon come down on the bloodsport of ?hounding.? It is the right policy for California. Tens of thousands of citizens demanded this long overdue animal welfare reform, and today they won it,? said Wayne Pacelle, president and CEO of The Humane Society of the United States.
?On behalf of dogs and wildlife, all of us say thanks to Governor Brown and Senator Lieu and other lawmakers who stood up to confront cruelty and adopt this needed reform,? added Jennifer Fearing, HSUS?s California senior state director, who led the lobbying effort.
Other bills that Gov. Brown signed into law:
Senate Bill 1229, authored by Sen. Fran Pavley, D-Santa Monica ? This bill prohibits landlords from requiring renters to declaw their cats or devocalize their dogs as a condition of tenancy.
Senate Bill 1500 improves the handling process for animals seized in cruelty and neglect cases ? This bill by Sen. Lieu will reduce lengthy, costly and unnecessary sheltering of animals held as evidence in criminal cases, allowing the animals to be placed in new homes more quickly.
Assembly Bill 1776 to name the endangered Pacific leatherback sea turtle the official marine reptile of California ? With this bill authored by Assemblymember Paul Fong, D-Cupertino, California joins the global effort to conserve this important species.
Assembly Bill 2609 improves the transparency, accountability and quality of the Fish and Game Commission ? Authored by Assemblymember Ben Hueso, D-San Diego, this bill? sets new requirements, processes and ethical standards for the Commission and its appointed members.
Assembly Bill 2402 and Senate Bill 1148 seeks to implement reforms that would improve the science, transparency, accountability and operations of California?s Department of Fish and Game, including swapping ?Wildlife? for ?Game? in the department?s name. Both bills embody recommendations from the California Fish and Wildlife Vision effort, a process that included The Humane Society of the United States as one of many stakeholders.
Unfortunately, Senate Bill 1480 to revise trapping laws to increase consumer and animal protections, was vetoed by Gov. Brown. This bill was authored by Sen. Ellen Corbett, D-San Leandro and co-sponsored by Born Free USA and San Francisco Wildlife Center.
