Cancer drugs hold promise; boy allegedly fired gun before ...

An experimental cancer drug made Mindy Whitmire's lung tumor disappear with few side effects. A new, cheaper cancer DNA test at Oregon Health & Science University aims to connect targeted drugs with patients.

By decoding the genes of patients and tumors, treatment of cancer is quickly entering a new, targeted phase, with fewer side effects and more survivors. The latest science holds enormous promise and potential to treat cancer like a chronic disease. The test is a stripped-down alternative to comprehensive genetic testing and will run roughly $2,000.

Catch up on some more of yesterday's headlines from Portland and Multnomah County:

Attempted-carjacking case: The 11-year-old Portland boy accused of trying to carjack and rob a woman at gunpoint with his dad's gun on Saturday had fired the gun into the air four times behind his house earlier that day, according to a court affidavit released Wednesday. The boy's younger sister, age 4, was in the yard at the time,? the boy's friend told Portland police.

Clackamas Town Center shooting: The 22-year-old Portland man suspected of killing two people at Clackamas Town Center, wounding a third and then turning a gun on himself quit his job recently, told friends he had inherited a big sum of money and was moving to Hawaii, then apparently missed his flight several days ago. Friends, co-workers and school officials described Jacob Tyler Roberts of Portland as fun, energetic, outgoing.

Parking meters: The Portland City Council voted 3-1 on Wednesday to expand paid parking in Northwest Portland, bringing meters and permits to the trendy shopping district around Northwest 21st and 23rd avenues in 2013 or 2014. Commissioner Nick Fish voted against the proposal but didn't offer an explanation. "I respectfully vote no," he said.

Centennial Mills: Portland's urban renewal agency agreed Wednesday to end its costly legal fight with the would-be developer of Centennial Mills for $200,000. The settlement is the latest turn in a lengthy struggle for the Portland Development Commission and its derelict riverfront property in Northwest Portland. Officials have spent more than $13 million on the mill site since acquiring it a decade ago and hope today's decision clears the way for eventual redevelopment.

Wheat sales: Egyptian grain buyers, squeezed by droughts in Russia and Australia, bought 165,000 tons of wheat this month from a far-flung source, the Pacific Northwest. The sellers included Cargill Inc. and Louis Dreyfus Commodities, two of the multinational goliaths involved in contract talks with longshore union leaders as a potential lockout looms at grain terminals in Portland, Vancouver and the Puget Sound.

Keen renovation: Keen Inc. had plenty of goals in mind earlier this year when it set out to overhaul a 105-year-old Pearl District building as its new headquarters. Few were as audacious as this one: Renovate the five-story place without generating more than a single dumpster of waste. Keen officials showed off their new home Wednesday.

Troutdale drive-throughs: Downtown Troutdale is now open to drive-through establishments, after City Council in its last meeting of the year unanimously approved the change to city development code. Members of the Troutdale Business Economic Development group had been advocating the change, primarily to open downtown coffee kiosks.

Restaurant searches: Google released their annual "Year-End Zeitgeist" today, a compilation of what people used the popular search engine to find in 2012. This year's data included a list of the top ten restaurant searches in Portland -- from Pok Pok to Ned Ludd -- and provides one metric to gauge which spots have been drawing local diners' interest.

Timbers acquisition: The Portland Timbers increased the competition at forward by acquiring veteran Ryan Johnson from Toronto, the team announced Wednesday. Johnson joined what is quickly becoming a very crowded position. The addition of Johnson, the announced re-signing of Danny Mwanga Tuesday and the expected returning players are signs that new Portland coach Caleb Porter wants and expects a tough battle for the starting forward spots when training camp opens in January.

Trail Blazers: Preview of tonight's game at the Rose Garden against the San Antonio Spurs.
