London Mayor Johnson praises proposed metro project in Hyderabad

Hyderabad, 28 November:?London Mayor Boris Johnson?on Wednesday praised the proposed?metro project?in Hyderabad, emphasising the need for a strong?transport infrastructure?to cope up with a burgeoning population.

Addressing businessmen, Johnson said: ?I am fascinated and awestruck by your ambition to create a metro at such speed. I congratulate you on that, and we look forward to see how that progresses.?

The?Hyderabad Metro Rail Project, which was flagged off in May this year, is the world?s larges Public Private Partnership project in metro sector, whose mandate is to decongest three dense corridors, covering a stretch of about 71.16 kilometres elevated metro rail, with about 65 stations and latest technologies are being used and it would meet the international standards.

Johnson said: ?If you are going to have a huge population increase, which both?London?and?Hyderabad?are experiencing, obviously London at a lower rate than Hyderabad, but still significant, you must put in the transport infrastructure, propose the mass transit system to cope with the growth and it is by putting in transport infrastructure first that you can create growth and jobs.?

The main focus of the project was to ensure the safety of the commuters and to work towards making the network as one of the safest mode of transportation in the city.

The project is likely to be completed within next three years by 2015.

The eco-friendly elevated metro stations would be located at an interval of one kilometre, and the metro rail would ply at a speed of 80 kilometres per hour and manage an average speed of 38-40 kilometres per hour.

Johnson further said that he liked the vision applied to the Hyderabad airport by using economic value of creating jobs in the vicinity of the airport.

?There is particular one thing that struck me yesterday was the vision that is being applied to your airport and the ambition you have there to use the economic value of an airport to trigger other development growth, jobs in the vicinity of that airport,? said Johnson.

The Rajiv Gandhi International Airport in the outskirt of Hyderabad is the country?s first greenfield airport developed under the public-private partnership initiative.

The airport has several firsts to its credit. It has the longest runway in Asia at 4.26 km and the tallest air traffic control (ATC) tower in the country at 75 metres.

Johnson said London would like to learn more about the development taking place in aviation sector.

?I think your vision is extremely exciting for the city. I think there are lots of ways in which London will love to learn more from what you are doing on everything from aviation to cleaning up the lake and mass transit that you are putting in,? said Johnson.

This is?Boris Johnson?s first official foreign investment seeking trip since London hosted the Olympic Games. He is planning to make several more trips to key overseas markets including China, Brazil and the Middle East. (ANI)

Charter School Proponents To Announce Major Focus On Shutting Down Failing Schools

Charter schools are about to get a reality check.

As someone who has observed the breakneck pace of the growing charter school movement up close, Greg Richmond, who leads the National Association of Charter School Authorizers (NACSA), is taking a step back.

"We didn't start this movement in order to create more failing schools, but that's what we have," Richmond told The Huffington Post. "Hundreds of them."

On Wednesday morning, Richmond will join New Jersey Schools Commissioner Chris Cerf and California charter schools advocate Jed Wallace at Washington D.C.'s National Press Club to announce a new campaign, "One Million Lives," that aims to crack the whip on the duds.

The campaign will focus on getting states to adopt rules that make failing charter schools close automatically, hold charter authorizers accountable for their schools' performance, and revamp their authorizing bodies so they become more professional. Initial allies include organizations and philanthropies that have, until now, focused on growth -- rather than quality -- in the charter sector.

Charter schools are publicly funded but independently run, and often admit students via lottery. Proponents such as the Obama administration advocate for charter schools in the belief that educational opportunity should not depend on zip code, and that running schools without regulations -- without district-imposed curricula or mandatory union representation -- gives schools more room to innovate and succeed, unencumbered by bureaucracy.

But critics have long claimed that the schools siphon money away from public schools, and a steady stream of evidence has shown that, on average, charter schools do not outperform traditional public schools. NACSA found that between 900 and 1,300 charter schools are performing within the lowest 15 percent of schools within their state.

Because of results like this, some say an initiative like One Million Lives is long overdue. About a year ago, several charter school supporters told HuffPost that the movement needed to check itself, since it would be hard for politicians to continue advocating for funding these schools without definitive results, and with so many underperforming schools continuing to operate.

"We've been talking about this for a number of years and still there are hundreds of failing schools in the country," Richmond said. "We have to switch gears from the rhetoric and make it reality."

Most recently, he added, education policymakers have been concerned with low charter school closure rates. According to his organization's survey, two years ago, 12 percent of charter schools up for renewal were shuttered; the next year, that number fell to 6 percent. These numbers were particularly startling because they indicate that charter schools aren't holding up their end of the bargain: namely, increased flexibility in exchange for more accountability. New survey findings released Wednesday, it should be noted, show that the rate increased the following year.

Most notably, philanthropic groups that have attracted citicism for supporting massive charter growth -- a move that often has them accused of "destroying public education," as Richmond put it -- are getting behind the cause. Richmond said the initiative has significant support from the Gates, Walton, Robertson and Dell foundations.

Other initial allies include Cerf, who, in a statement, said the focus on closures "is precisely what the exchange of autonomy for accountability means -- the core idea inherent in charter schools."

Michelle Rhee, a former Washington, D.C. schools chancellor, also praised the campaign.

"If we are going to really help kids succeed, every school entrusted with public money ... must be held accountable to the families they serve and the taxpayer for high standards and achievement,"?Rhee said.?"We need to promote better authorizer practices and stronger state policies to achieve a higher quality of charter schools and, at the same time, set clear protocols for closing chronically failing schools."

But even as the campaign launches, some states appear to be continuing down a path that prioritizes charter school growth over quality, threatening to create legions of new underperforming schools. The Michigan state legislature is currently weighing a bill that would expand charter schools further by allowing basically anyone to start one of these schools, with few safeguards for quality or experience.

"It provides no assurance of quality," said Amber Arellano, who heads the nonpartisan advocacy group EdTrust Midwest. "This is a reckless gamble that threatens the very future of our students."

Job Interview? Write a Thank You Note!

Post image for After a Great Job Interview, Write a Killer Thank You Note

Once upon a time, almost anyone who could write, knew how to write a thank you note. But today, a well-written note is so rare that it places you ahead of the pack.

The best thank you notes are short, sincere, and specific to each interview. So:

    1. Be Prepared for Thank You Note Success

    • Before going to your interview, buy an attractive blank?note card from a card shop. No humor, and nothing fancy or with writing on the inside. This needs to reflect?you, so keep the card simple and write your note in your own words.
    • Take the card and a stamp with you to your interview.
    • Be sure to ask your interviewer for their business card, so that you know where to send your thank you.
    • After your interview, go sit quietly (if you?re an introvert, want to take some notes) or call a friend (if you?re an extrovert, or want to talk things out) and think through what went well and what you?d like to do differently next time.

Now use this simple approach to craft your note:

    2. Start By Thinking About Your Audience

In this case, your ?audience? is the person, or people, who interviewed you. To put them solidly in mind, ask yourself:

    • Did they enjoy our conversation?
    • Where, in particular, did we connect?
    • Was their interviewing style more on the ?warm and friendly? or more on the ?strictly business? end of the scale?

OK, got it? Now you?re ready to write.

    3. Use ?The Rule of 3? to Write Your Note

Three sentences, plus a date, a greeting, and a close, are all you need to get this job done.

At the top of the note, in the right-hand corner, write today?s date.

Then, on the left, write, ?Dear [Their Name].? If the person was super friendly, a first name will do; it they were super formal, use their title. In between ?Mr.? or ?Ms.? and their last name is correct.

    Then write:

Sentence: #1 Thank the person for meeting with you.

    • If you liked them, or if they were particularly friendly, you can say something like ?Thank you for making my interview today so pleasant.?
    • If they were more businesslike, just say something like, ?Thank you for taking the time to meet with me today.?

Sentence #2: Mention something that you liked about the interview.

    • If they were personal or friendly, say something personal, such as, ?I particularly enjoyed our talk about [whatever you?and they?particularly enjoyed talking about].?
    • If they were more businesslike, say something businesslike, such as, ?I was glad to learn more about [name of organization].?

Sentence #3: Repeat your interest in the job (but don?t?repeat your qualifications or act as if the interview is still going on!).

    • Friendly version: ?I would be thrilled to work for [name of organization], and hope to meet you again as a colleague.?
    • Business version: ?I am now even more interested in working with [name of organization], and appreciate your help with the process.?

Here?s what those two notes look like when you put it all together:

    Friendlier Version:
Thank you for making my interview today so pleasant.?I particularly enjoyed our talk about [whatever you?and they?particularly enjoyed talking about].?I would be thrilled to work for [name of organization], and hope to meet you again as a colleague.

    More Businesslike Version:
Thank you for taking the time to meet with me today.?I was glad to learn more about [name of organization].?I am now even more interested in working with [name of organization], and appreciate your help with the process.

Sign it ?Sincerely,? then print your name so that you?re sure they can read it. If you have a business card, include it.

    And Last But Not Least?

Go home, put your feet up, and have a glass of wine or hot tea.

The hardest job in the world is looking for a job. So congratulate yourself on a job well done today, and be kind to yourself while you?re waiting for the results.

Facebook policy change results in hysteria ? and a hoax

    Featured

    1 day

If you're confused over a recent email from Facebook regarding its data use policy, you're not alone.?

The email ? with the subject line "Updates to Data Use Policy and Statement of Rights and Responsibilities" ? sparked an online hysteria which divided the Facebooking world into two factions: users who suspected the email?was yet another phishing spam scam; and users?who believed that Facebook is rolling back copyright and privacy rights, and protested this by cutting-and-pasting a viral?status update. ?Neither?are accurate.

The hysterically reposted?status?update starts?like this (and goes on and on and on):

In response to the new Facebook guidelines I hereby declare that my copyright is attached to all of my personal details, illustrations, graphics, comics, paintings, photos and videos, etc. (as a result of the Berner Convention). For commercial use of the above my written consent is needed at all times!

Blah blah blah and so on. We're all busy people, so let's just cut to the chase:

    • The Facebook policy update?email, subject line: "Updates to Data Use Policy Statement of Rights and Responsibilities" (pictured below)?is totally real, totally from Facebook and totally?not a scam. ?
    • The Facebook policy update doesn't represent any egregious robbery of your personal data, photos, drawings,?macaroni?art, etc., let alone any personal data you've already made available to Facebook or on many a site or mobile device.
    • Even if Facebook was coming for your macaroni art, et. al, your cut-and-paste status would do nothing to change it. As Snopes (a site you should have bookmarked) helpfully reminds: "Facebook users cannot retroactively negate any of the privacy or copyright terms they agreed to when they signed up for their Facebook accounts nor can they unilaterally alter or contradict any new privacy or copyright terms instituted by Facebook simply by posting a contrary legal notice on their Facebook walls. " This is true whether Facebook is a publicly traded company or not.?

Now that we're clear on that, let's focus on the notable items of this totally real, authentic?Facebook update (which you can read in full here):

    • The new policy will allow Facebook to obtain data about you?"from our?affiliates?or our advertising partners" (with whom you've already shared your personal info, such as websites, memberships, etc.), to "improve the quality of ads." Plenty of sites already do this, matching your info (which you've provided, technically?of your own free will)?to show you ads your most likely to respond to, and to report to those ad partners how you did respond.
    • Facebook is also axing your ability to vote on policy changes ? a practice it first launched in 2009 to a continually?underwhelming?response. As?Suzanne Choney reported earlier this year, a vote on privacy changes resulted in "hardly anyone voting."?(The trouble here?may be in the rules, however.?"Hardly anyone"?equaled?342,632 votes at the time," Choney explained. An army, but hardly the third of its users Facebook requires to?vote before it registers?dissent.)?
    • You have until 9 a.m. ET, Wednesday,?Nov. 28 ?to vote or comment on these and the other?changes ? probably for the last time. ?That's a scant seven days since the policy notice went live on the Facebook Governance page, but face it, were you ever?really going to vote, anyway?

NBC News?contacted Facebook over the confusion likely caused by the latest policy change?announcement and the latest Facebook copyright status hoax, and received the following email statement:

As outlined in our terms, the people who use Facebook own all of the content and information they post on Facebook, and they can control how it is shared through their privacy and application settings. Over the last few years, we have noticed some statements that suggest otherwise and we wanted to take a moment to remind you of the facts ? when you post things like photos to Facebook, we do not own them.?

    True enough.

As we reported a year ago, Facebook made a settlement with the Federal Trade Commission over the massive privacy rollback on 2009 which bars the social network "from making?any further deceptive privacy claims." Facebook is also?now required to?"get consumer's approval before it changes the way it shares their data, and requires that it obtain periodic assessments of its privacy practices by independent, third-party auditors for the next 20 years."

Hence these emails that send us into a status-update cut-and-paste panic. If you fell for it this time around, don't be too hard on yourself. You're certainly not alone. As Facebook users, we're still angry over the social network playing fast and loose with our privacy in years past. Some people show their rage in fits of cutting and pasting, others vow they'll never touch Facebook again, then secretly log in three days later. We may love it too much to leave it, but can you really ever?trust?a cheater ? even when that cheater is trying to show you its reformed??

?Helen A.S. Popkin goes blah blah blah about privacy and then asks her to join her on Twitter and/or Facebook. Also, Google+.?Because that's how she rolls.

Recreational Sport ? Steps to Follow When Choosing Your Leisure ...

How do you know which recreational sport is right for you? Though this is a simple question, it may not have a simple answer. Before answering this question, it makes sense to know the definition of a recreational sport. In simple terms, a recreational sport is any sport activity or event that one engages in during leisure time. In other words, it is a sport activity or event performed primarily for entertainment and fun. Though in some cases there may be monetary rewards associated with passtime sport, it is not usually the main goal. Other reasons associated with participating in a leisure activities includes: fitness, health, socialization, competition and sport support among others.

There are several options of leisure activities available for all age categories ranging from indoor to outdoor. Making the decision on which choice to pursue can be a real challenge and this varies significantly from one person to the other. For former professional athletes, the decision may be easier especially if they continue participating in their particular former professional sports (i.e. recreational level). The big task of choosing the right recreational sport is however on beginners. In order to make the right choice(s) if you are a beginner, it is important to consider the following general guidelines:

    1. Choose a sport that you understand and are passionate about: Leisure sport in a way becomes part of your lifestyle and therefore needs to be entertaining and enjoyable. Choosing something that you don?t like or have no knowledge about can be frustrating even if your friends adore it. It only makes sense to pursue something that you know its rules and regulations. However, this does not mean one cannot learn a new sport or game, but it easier to do so if you love the sport.

    2. Consider your goals and objectives: As mentioned above, there are different reasons that drive people into recreational sports. Choosing a sport that is in line with your goals, for example losing weight will only enrich the whole recreational experience. Some one looking for a recreational sport to aid in cutting down some extra body weight may benefit from running, jogging, walking, hiking or swimming among other high calorie burning sport activities as opposed to playing cards or video games. On the other hand somebody looking for a recreational sport that favors socialization may benefit from the latter.

    3. Facilities, tools and equipment required: Different recreational sports may require different tools, facilities or equipment or in some cases may require none at all. These tools, facilities or equipment may also vary depending on the needs of every person. For example if you want to play golf for recreation, you will definitely have to purchase a golf club, balls and perhaps shoes. You will also need an available and accessible golf course to play. In some cases if you have more than one favorite recreational sport, you may have to choose what is more convenient based on availability of facilities. It makes more sense to go running at a nearby track especially if you get off work late in the evenings than having to drive for several miles to get to a golf course (i.e. if you like both golf and running).

    4. Availability of time: Since a recreational sport is a pastime sport, choosing the right one may be dictated by how much free time is at one?s disposal. Some leisure sports are more time consuming than others. Additionally some of these sports must only be played outside. Where as some sports such as running, jogging, walking, playing tennis, playing basketball or swimming offers both indoor and outdoor options, some of them, for example playing golf, hiking, kayaking, surfing among other don?t. The more time one has, the more the options to choose from and the vice versa.

    5. Seasonality: Though this may not be a big deal to people living along the equatorial line geographically, it definitely affects people living in areas with winter and summer climatic seasons. Some recreational sports such as those requiring snow may only be available during winter and only in some parts of the world. So if skiing is the only favorite recreational sport that one can participate in, it means there will be nothing to do for most of the year i.e. during the other seasons. When deciding on the right sport for recreation, it is advisable to have more than one option especially in a situation where one is affected by seasonal changes.

    6. Number of participants required: Where as most sports require participation of more than one person at one time, some can be pursued individually. If your schedule does not allow group or team participation, choosing a recreational sport that will enable you to participate alone is a good idea. Jogging, walking, swimming, biking and running are great examples.

As mentioned earlier, this is not an exhaustive list of guidelines, but it is only meant to give you an idea of how to pick the best sport that will make your recreational life a success. Remember the bottom line is fun and entertainment.

White House: Tax hike threat could hurt retailers

(AP) ? Despite early signs of robust sales, White House economists warned Monday that the uncertainty of a potential hike in taxes next year for middle class taxpayers under the looming fiscal cliff could hurt consumer confidence during the crucial holiday shopping season.

In a new report that coincides with Congress' return after the Thanksgiving holiday, the White House says that if lawmakers don't halt the automatic increase in taxes for households earning less than $250,000, consumers might even curtail their shopping during the current holiday season.

"As we approach the holiday season, which accounts for close to one-fifth of industry sales, retailers can't afford the threat of tax increases on middle-class families," the report by President Barack Obama's National Economic Council and his Council of Economic Advisers says.

The report comes as official Washington dives back into negotiations on how to avoid tax hikes and deep spending cuts scheduled to begin taking effect Jan. 1.

White House and congressional leadership aides said Obama spoke separately with House Speaker John Boehner and Democratic Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid over the weekend. The aides would not reveal details of the conversations. Obama last met with the bipartisan congressional leadership to discuss the fiscal cliff on Nov. 16. No new meetings have been announced.

Meanwhile, the stock market edged lower in the morning as the outcome of the budget talks remained inconclusive.

Retailers such as Macy's, Target and Saks were down in early trading, amid fears that consumers might cut back this season. But the National Retail Federation reported earlier that 247 million shoppers visited stores and shopping websites during the long Thanksgiving weekend, up 9 percent from a year ago. They spent an average of $423, up 6 percent.

The White House report also says a sudden increase in taxes for middle-income taxpayers would reduce consumer spending in 2013 by nearly $200 billion, significantly slowing the economic recovery.

The figures echo estimates by private forecasters and by the Congressional Budget Office.

Congress and Obama have until the end of the year to avoid across the board tax increases that would do away with rates set during the administration of President George W. Bush and restore higher tax rates in place during President Bill Clinton's administration when the economy was robust and the federal government had a budget surplus.

Many middle income taxpayers also would be exposed to automatic tax increases under the Alternative Minimum Tax, which is designed to guarantee a certain level of tax payment by wealthier taxpayers.

According to the report, a married couple earning between $50,000 and $85,000 with two children would see a $2,200 increase in their taxes.

Obama wants the Bush-era tax rates to remain at their current level for households earning less than $250,000. He is calling on Congress to increase taxes for families earning more than that threshold.

Obama's plan is part of an overall deficit reduction package that would increase tax revenue by about $1.5 trillion and reduce spending by a similar amount over 10 years.

Congressional Republicans, led by Boehner, have said they are open to including discussions about additional revenue but have balked at any plan that raises tax rates on the wealthy. They argue that the higher rates would also hit some small businesses, stifling economic growth.

Instead, they have advocated changes in the tax code that would eliminate tax breaks and loopholes that primarily benefit the wealthy. Several key Republican lawmakers have also said they would not be bound by a no-tax-increase pledge that they have adhered to in the past.

House Majority Leader Eric Cantor said Monday the urgency of finding solutions intensifies as the end of the year approaches.

"If we don't do anything, on Jan. 1, 2013, there's a lot more people paying a lot more," the Virginia Republican said on MSNBC.

Cantor said the rapidly approaching deadline accounts for the more serious tone to the debate, but also reaffirmed the GOP's opposition to raising tax rates for the wealthy. "We've got to have the president step up and say, here's my position on how we reform these entitlements and start managing down the deficits," he said.

"What should be on the table is a recipe to fix the problem and not give away growth," Cantor said, when asked whether Republicans would agree to have increases in tax rates considered.

"We were re-elected to fix the problems, get the economy going again," he said. "Well, the president got re-elected and we know at the end of the year taxes are going to go up on everybody, rich and poor alike," if no action is taken to avert the hikes.

Y Combinator Interviews Start Tomorrow, Make Sure You Know YC ...

It?s that time of the year again. Lucky applicants who got selected for an interview with three Y Combinator partners will pitch their startup starting tomorrow. Founders will have exactly 10 minutes, so they shouldn?t waste time with small talk. It might be a good idea to learn everything about the partners beforehand, and especially what they look like. A page made by designers Jeremy Le Van and Pierre Valade will help you with that.

From Tuesday to Saturday, Y Combinator partners will spend hours at a time selecting the Winter 2013 class. Due to Hurricane Sandy, the application deadline was slightly delayed and founders had until November 2 to apply. Everything is back to the normal schedule now. But the incubator accepts late applications from time to time.

For the Summer 2012 class, 75 startups graduated and presented their startup in front of the press and investors. As a reminder, accepted companies receive between $11,000 and $20,000 of funding, three months of advice, support and connections, and make a presentation during the demo day. More importantly, startups join the Y Combinator alumni network.

But before all that, teams have to present a compelling idea and in the proper way. Applicants can browse the unofficial YC list, powered by Seed-DB and CrunchBase, and get in touch with recent graduates. Some of them will be there in the waiting area before the interviews. They may provide helpful advice. But you shouldn?t forget as well to study a face book in order to know who you are talking to and what their area of expertise is. It will definitely be an asset.

Y Combinator is a venture fund which focuses on seed investments to startup companies. It offers financing as well as business consulting along with other opportunities to 2-4 person companies looking to take an idea to a product. Y Combinator looks for companies with ?good? ideas over companies with experience and a business model. The company made its first investments in Summer 2005. Y Combinator selects companies to finance and consult with twice a year. They are located in...

NC Governor Pat McCrory: Family Law Reform For Shared Parenting

NC Governor Pat McCroryFathers and Families is asking NC Governor Pat McCrory to start talking with NC Senate and House leaders about bringing the presumption for Equally Shared Parenting to NC Children so that they can experience direct support, love, guidance, and nurturing from both parents and extended families. As a reader of this article, be it a non-custodial parent, step-parent, grandparent, or other interested party, it is important to widely share this article with other NC non-custodial family members on sites like Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin, and other networks to help rally them around this issue. Governor Pat McCrory needs to hear from NC non-custodial families numbering in the millions that they are tired of being marginalized in their childrens lives as visitors 5 days a month. NC Governor Pat McCrory needs to understand that having two equal parents at the table for children that are providing emotional, physical, psychological, and direct financial support to them brings far greater resources and opportunities than any big government enforcement agency like child support enforcement can ever deliver. Fathers and Families strongly believes that in situations where custodial parents who are receiving expanding social services like educational assistance, housing assistance, food assistance, medical assistance, job assistance, and other programs which is creating havoc on the NC budget, that there will be less of a need for these programs when you have the non-custodial parent and extended family in the lives of children. NC Governor Pat McCrory needs to understand that currently in the NC Family Law system, non-custodial parents and families are pushed to the margins of kids lives and can only offer financial help to their children.

Fathers and Families did not endorse Candidate McCrory in his run for the Governor, nor is the posting of this video meant to imply an endorsement for future elections. This video is here to remind Governor McCrory of NC non-custodial family struggles as outlined below.

Governor Pat McCrory and the NC Family Law System

    • Governor McCrory must understand that the current family law courts are about one parent winning, and the other parent losing. This system sets the stage for further despair, animosity, anger, and anxiety for the non-custodial parent and extended family after a divorce. Father and Families believes that no one parent should win in the court system, and that courts should reward two parents for working together for the betterment of the children.
    • Governor Pat McCrory and the NC Legislature must understand that the current Family Law system puts NC children at an economic disadvantage for decades. Currently, the average child custody battle costs EACH parent about $20,000 and statistics show that these parents will fight two in eighteen years. Additionally, parents will find minor contempt battles, child support enforcement battles, custody modification battles, and other battles costing more money. Fathers and Families believes that NC Parents spend at a minimum of $100,000 over the life of the minor child. Fathers and Families would like to see this money go towards a child?s education, healthcare, a home, or to start a business.
    • Governor Pat McCrory and The NC House and Senate needs to understand that the current NC Family Law System pits two parents against each other in an attempt to win a court battle. NC Parents are using every means available to win and this has dramatic negative effects on children. Through Shared Parenting, there is nothing to win because both parents will be equalized. When NC Judges change the current stage from ?OK, You guys fight it out and whoever has the most dirt loses? to that of ?You both are going to present a shared parenting plan for the benefit of the child and whoever does not abide by it loses? then you will see less conflict between parents.
    • Consistently, more and more studies show that children who have significant access to fathers (the usual non-custodial parent) do better in school, have less emotional problems, are able to resist drugs, and avoid pregnancy until later in life.
    • Governor Pat McCrory must understand that we believe hundreds of thousands of NC non-custodial parents do not have the money for an attorney to seize visitation rights to their children, or advocate for them in the courts. There should be no pay wall for a parent to see his/her children.
    • Governor Pat McCrory and NC Representatives and Senators must understand that 40% of children born today in NC come from non-married parents, and under current law, the biological father has zero rights and access to the child unless he can find $5000-7000 and hire an attorney to legitimate the children. This is assuming if he is ever aware that he has a child.
    • Governor Pat McCrory and the NC Legislature needs to understand that NC non-custodial families are going bankrupt hiring private attorneys at $5000 per incident when custodial parents get free government lawyers each time child support wants to be modified by the custodial parent.
    • Governor McCrory and NC Representatives should be aware that whenever a custodial parent gets into trouble financially, social service is able to save them using housing assistance, job assistance, food assistance, medical assistance, psychological assistance, other assistance programs and tax incentives. When non-custodial parents get into trouble financially, they go to jail. Governor, would it not make more sense to strengthen BOTH parents for the good of NC children?
    • Fathers and Families is sending the message to NC Governor Pat McCrory that it is time to stop ALL NC adoptions until amended legislation is in place protecting a biological father from having a child he did not know existed from being adopted out. Consistently, we are hearing more and more fathers tell us that they learned about a biological child of theirs being adopted out because the mother of the child refused to help adoptions agencies discover the father. Fathers and Families is not against adoptions, but we do believe that a biological parent?s natural love outweighs an adoptive family?s love. This issue not only affects NC Fathers, but the many women in paternal families who have a natural love for their biologically related children.

    Republican Governor Pat McCrory

Statement on Positive Outcomes with NC Shared Parenting

Fathers and Families believes there are many positive outcomes for NC children in families with shared parenting, and we are asking Governor Pat McCrory to review this information when considering legislation surrounding it.

    • First and foremost, despite the breakup of a marriage, NC Children still have a family. Equally Shared Parenting is the next best thing to preserving that feeling of knowing that you have a mother, father, grandparents, and aunts and uncles that are consistently in your life. Under current NC Law and in the family law courts, non-custodial parents and extended families are pushed far into the margins of a child?s life.
    • A NC Equally Shared Parenting initiative means less drain on Welfare and Low Income Assistance programs. When NC non-custodial parents, step-parents, and other family members are brought into equality with the custodial parent and have considerably more time to directly support children, there will be 50% more resources and opportunities to meet kids needs, thus decreasing the need for public assistance.
    • Governor Pat McCrory should know NC Family Law reform and equally shared parenting creates more free time for custodial mothers to further a college education (or add to formal education), learn a trade, start a business, or pursue social endeavors.
    • Equally Shared Parenting will allow fathers the opportunity to put into action fatherhood initiatives have taught them. Why have a fatherhood initiative if you are never going to allow these parents to put what they learned into action?
    • Mandating shared physical custody or equally shared parenting will lead to a reduction in bitter, destructive child custody battles, which put intense emotional strain on children following a divorce or separation. Fathers and Families believes that Governor Pat McCrory surely understands the importance of this.
    • NC Shared Parenting will decrease domestic violence. Many times prior, during, and after a divorce, one parent will fear losing touch with their kids because it is widely known in NC that there is a system that mandates that one parent has the majority of time with the children, and the other parent does not. In NC, 85% of parents are fathers in a State that has no presumption for which parent gets custody. Additionally, Family Law Judges consistently allow a custodial parent to move a child hundreds of miles away from a non-custodial family. This fear, anxiety, despair, and emotional struggle unfortunately leads to domestic violence.

Statement on Social Security Title IV-D Legislation

Fathers and Families wants Governor Pat McCrory to understand that the Social Security Act, Title IV, Part D, and specifically section 458 which is entitled ?Incentive Payments To States? is a revenue stream for NC Social Services Jobs, Programs, and Services. In NC, for each dollar collected by Child Support Enforcement, the State gets back a match amount of federal money that is then used to replenish Welfare money. While at face value this may seem positive, it actually isn?t because the State of NC has become dependent on this money and NEEDS non-custodial parents as far from their children as possible so that they pay greater child support money and trigger greater federal money. Fathers and Families has faith in Governor McCrory, the NC Senate, House of Representatives, and Family Law Judges to find an alternative way to fund Social Services outside of separating kids from half of their family.

Statement For The Argument That Fathers Just Want Shared Parenting To Lower Their Child Support

The argument that Fathers just want to have equal parentage and access to their children to lower child support is a clever argument by those opposed to shared parenting because it tries to rope others into believing the stigma that all Fathers are Deadbeat. The fact is, if this were about money then Fathers would be screaming the loudest AGAINST shared parenting because the fact is, under Shared Parenting Fathers will expend far greater dollars when they have their children equal amounts of the time. This argument is an attempt to socialize responsible fatherhood in with paying a big government enforcement agency money so that Title IV-D funds will be generated back to the State of NC. The greater responsibility in fatherhood is directly supporting children financially, emotionally, physically, and psychologically. This is something that child support enforcement doesn?t offer. Therefore, we encourage Governor Pat McCrory to resist this argument when the opposition and Family Law lobby meets with you.

Statement On Shared Parenting in NC Not Being Needed Because There Is Proof Fathers Do Not Want Shared Parenting

Many groups who oppose equally shared parenting say that fathers give up custody and equal parentage in agreements outside of a court room 80% of the time and this proves that the majority of fathers prefer not to be equal parents. Again, while this is true, the fact is that fathers know that if they go into a family court and ask for equal parentage or joint physical custody/shared parenting, that they will lose and most likely end up with less than what is being offered outside of court and made a deal they were not comfortable with. Why go to a Family Law court and spend $20,000 just to lose and see less of your children that what is being offered outside court for free even if it is not optimal? Again, we encourage Governor Pat McCrory to resist this argument when the opposition and Family Law lobby meets with you.

Opposition Governor Pat McCrory Is Likely To Receive From Those Opposed To Shared Parenting and NC Family Law Reform

    • American Bar Association/NC State Bar: If Governor Pat McCrory decides to encourage the NC Senate and House to consider Shared Parenting in NC, he is going to meet serious resistance from Lawyers and Judges. While they will have a myriad of cherry picked reasons why shared parenting is dangerous for children, the fact is under shared parenting, without parents fighting for 18 years NC lawyers are not receiving their enormous retainer fees and hourly fees that are charged in Family Law cases. NC Judges will resist Family Law reform and shared parenting because it will take away their discretion in what they say is needed because every case is different. Unfortunately, with 100% discretion comes the ability to abuse the system and legislate from the bench or allow biases to come into play without an accountability.
    • Governor Pat McCrory will undoubtedly meet resistance from ?Womens Rights Groups? like the National Organization For Women? who also will bring cherry picked statistics and reasons why Family Law Reform and Shared Parenting is a bad idea for Women and Children. The immediate problem we see for these organizations is that for decades they were about advancement for equality, but in Family Law they are asking for inequality. To Fathers and Families this smells of disingenuous agendas and politics at play. Furthermore, and this is important, there are a LOT of women who are hurt in a divisive Family Law system. These women include step-mothers, paternal grandmothers, aunts, female step-children, now adult female children, and even custodial mothers with male children who will find themselves marginalized later in life if we do not have Family Law reform in NC.
    • Domestic Violence Groups in NC will also oppose any type of Family Law Reform and Shared Parenting because they feel that Shared Parenting means that Fathers will have greater access and chances to kill and hurt children and former spouses. In addition, these groups will have their own set of cherry picked statements and professionals in the radical Womens groups with what seems like compelling data. However, Fathers and Families asks Governor Pat McCrory to use some common sense around domestic violence. First, custodial mothers and women hit, intimidate, and use control every day and nobody in these groups are talking about them crossing some hurdle to be with their kids. And, if you believe THEIR statistics that more domestic violence is committed from men, does it really matter WHO is doing it the most? The problem is Domestic Violence, not which gender is doing it the most. And, in reality, does Governor McCrory really believe that the best way to de-escalate a father from committing domestic violence is to completely alienate him from his children, see them moved hundreds of miles away, and watch as the women in his family get hurt? Fathers and Families is appealing to Governor Pat McCrory not to give into the gender warfare and politics surrounding Domestic Violence by those who want to make it a political football for their agendas.

Statement on False Allegations of Domestic Violence and Child Abuse

Fathers and Families hears daily from many non-custodial families, be it fathers, mothers, and men and women in the extended family who tell us that the majority of child custody battles and child support enforcement cases today involve some type of false allegation of Domestic Violence or Abuse in the hopes of gaining a tactical advantage in the NC Family Courts. Given the emotion surrounding these issues, many NC Judges are allowing these false allegations to proceed to conviction to ?be on the safe side.? The problems with this is, that a simple allegation in NC can lead to complete alienation of children from their fathers, step-mothers, grandmothers, aunts and uncles, and step-siblings.

Governor Pat McCrory and NC Non-Custodial Family Voters

Undoubtedly Governor Pat McCrory is aware of the divorce statistics in NC, and rate at which parents are having children outside of marriage. With that, Fathers and Families believes that roughly HALF of the NC population has either a direct tie or indirect tie to a NC non-custodial family member who sees the struggle they endure within the NC Family Law system and courts. Furthermore, Governor McCrory needs to understand that non-custodial families come from all racial and ethnic backgrounds, political party affiliations, and socioeconomic backgrounds. And, one can clearly see that many WOMEN in non-custodial families are equally hurt in the NC Family Courts unless we bring about reform for the presumption for Equally Shared Parenting.

monetary process contingency keep another eye on a cycle of funds
moving in and out of accounts tranquil by a MOF.

?Fiscal deposits have spin a vital cause to change the
central bank?s financial process as good as income markets,? pronounced a
senior merchant during a Chinese state-owned bank in Beijing.

?In months when a marketplace is brief of liquidity, the
ministry can also use supervision deposition auctions to assistance the
central bank boost income supply. In this sense, mercantile deposits
are indeed being used as a financial apparatus as well.?

    THE WAY IT WORKS

Chinese companies and other institutions, that compensate taxes
and fees to a MOF and a internal offices, contingency deposition these
payments into accounts during designated blurb banks in the
form of mercantile deposits. Such deposits can?t be used by
commercial banks and play no purpose in financial policy.

However, 3 times per month, a blurb banks hand
over all of these deposits to a People?s Bank of China (PBOC),
where they spin partial of a PBOC?s financial base. This base
money can be possibly defended in times of additional liquidity, or
pushed behind into a complement in a form of MOF spending, deposit
auctions and refunds on taxation overpayments.

A diminution in mercantile deposits on blurb banks? balance
sheets therefore implies some-more income has been handed over to the
state and is now accessible for income injection.

On months when mercantile deposits drop, a PBOC customarily has
less need to inject short-term income into a complement in a form
of retreat repurchase agreements, given income is entering the
system by channels tranquil by a MOF.

There are transparent anniversary characteristics to a upsurge of
    funds.

In December, for example, a MOF typically injects large
amounts of income in a form of taxation refunds, subsidies to
government institutions and income transfers to companies in
    pillar industries.

Deposits also tend to diminution in March, June, September,
and November, while other months customarily uncover net fiscal
deposits increasing, tightening income supply in a banking
    system.

    RECORD INJECTION

An bargain of a MOF?s position on any given month
can be simply subsequent from monthly information on blurb banks?
end-month mercantile deposits published by a PBOC.

The method accessible a mercantile over-abundance of 829.6 billion yuan
($133.2 billion) in a initial 10 months of 2012, and is set to
generate some-more over-abundance in a final dual months.

A Reuters research of a information shows that a MOF is likely
to siphon a record high 1.6 trillion yuan into a complement in the
last dual months of this year. Data suggests it injected slightly
lesser amounts during a same duration given 2008, compared to
under 580 billion yuan in 2007 and reduction than 220 billion yuan in
    2002 during a same period.

The supervision has designed to record an altogether budgetary
deficit of 800 billion yuan for 2012, implying that a entirety
of a mercantile over-abundance will be plowed behind into a economy,
    supplemented by additional necessity spending.

    THE AUCTION MECHANISM

The impact of supervision spending on subsidies, refunds and
transfers is formidable to magnitude precisely, though a auction of
deposits combined by supervision revenues is easier to manage.

Such deposits are auctioned for specific durations of time -
usually between 3 and 6 months ? definition regulators and
money marketplace participants can design how prolonged a income will
    be in a system.

This year?s auction volume for such deposits is equivalent
to around half of a sum volume of open marketplace operations
conducted by a executive bank, injecting a record 690 billion
yuan into blurb banks so distant this year, adult from 450 billion
yuan in 2011 and 170 billion yuan in 2008.

This means that even as a PBOC has mutated its
open-market operations to concentration roughly exclusively on a usage
of retreat repos with tenors of reduction than one month to manage
the interbank income supply, it has a massive
pool of accessible deposits to tumble behind on if necessary.

The coherence this toolset provides China?s economic
managers has authorised them to conflict calls to revoke a reserve
requirement ratio (RRR) during blurb banks for a third time
this year, even as world?s second-largest economy slowed to its
slowest in 3 years in a third quarter.

This in spin authorised regulators to continue to fight
inflation ? that regulators fear would be aggravated by another
RRR cut given such cuts inject income into a complement that
cannot simply be pulled behind out ? but formulating a liquidity
    crisis.

As a result, traders pronounced that short-term income rates for
the benchmark seven-day bond repurchase rate have
remained in gentle domain around or subsequent 3 percent even
as a executive bank has authorised income to empty from a system
through open marketplace operations for a final 3 weeks.

Traders design rates to sojourn fast or even diminution in
    most partial of December.

Although 2013?s bill will not be motionless until subsequent March,
if China?s economy continues to recover, mercantile revenues will
likely arise further, giving a Ministry of Finance even more
    firepower to change rates.

Give the gift of premium Web services

    14 hrs.

As you're trying to come up with great gifts for the holidays, software likely isn't the first thing that comes to mind. It can make a great gift for the right person, though, especially when they're not willing to shell out the cash themselves (as so few people are). Here are some of our favorite (and your favorite) premium Web services that not only boost productivity, but dish out a little holiday cheer too.

Note: Most of these are monthly subscriptions, so you can gift them however you like. Giving someone a few months or a year of a service is a great gift that you can tweak for your budget, and leave yourself room for the same gift next year if they really like it.

If a service doesn't offer a gift option, you can always use a prepaid credit card and give it to them for use with the service you're gifting.

    SUBSCRIPTIONS?UNDER $5 A MONTH?

    A personalized domain name
It?may sound silly for the No.?1 item on our list, but it's the cheapest subscription you can give, costing only $3.99 a year (that's 33 cents a month), and it's something everyone should have. They may not know it, but a personalized domain name can come in extremely handy, and will only get more important as time goes on. They can post their online CV or resume there, redirect it to their Twitter or Facebook page, and further control how the Internet sees you. The quicker you snatch it up before someone else with the same name, the better. We've linked to Namecheap below, since that's your favorite domain registrar, but check out our Hive Five for a few other options.

    Crashplan+
If you have a friend who still isn't backing up their data, it's the perfect time to give them the gift of bulletproof backup thanks to Crashplan. Even if they're backing up to an external drive, that isn't good enough???they need something in the cloud so no matter what happens, their backups are always accessible and they don't become another sad story of lost data. Crashplan is our favorite option, being cheap and easy to set up, so get them in the habit now. If you're particularly cheap, RobotTaco notes that you can get a free subscription right now from this page.

    LastPass and Xmarks Premium
    I
f you know someone with multiple computers, the gift of synchronization can be a wonderful thing. Give them a combined subscription to LastPass and Xmarks for their passwords, bookmarks, history, open tabs, and everything else so they're able to browse easily from any computer.?

Xmarks is convenient, but LastPass is the most important app here, as it gives you the enhanced security everyone should have???make sure they create good passwords and turn on two-factor authentication, while you're at it, so they don't fall prey to the ever-increasing number of hacks happening nowadays.?

The pro versions give you access to the mobile apps for each service, more secure two-factor authentication with a thumb drive or YubiKey, plus an ad-free experience and priority support. You can buy each service separately, but buying them both together gets you a pretty sweet discount.

    Pandora One
Everyone loves Pandora, but no one likes ads interrupting their music. Reader jrod3737recommended a subscription to Pandora One as a gift for just about anyone: it not only ditches the ads, but lets you use the Pandora desktop client, customize your experience with skins, and listen to higher quality audio all day long. You can either buy a month-to-month subscription or grab an entire year for a discounted price.

    Evernote Premium
Evernote is still your favorite note-taking application, and it's only gotten better lately. If you know someone that isn't using Evernote yet???particularly if they need some extra organization in their life??a subscription to Evernote Premium is a great way to get them started. A premium subscription gets you more space per month, offline notebooks, collaborative notes, better speed, PDF search, priority support, an ad-free experience, and more. It's the perfect way to take someone's organization from good to awesome with one simple download.

    Netflix and Hulu Plus
For the true TV addict, grab them a subscription to Netflix and/or Hulu Plus so they can watch all their favorite movies and TV shows on demand. Netflix is great for movies and TV shows alike, while Hulu Plus is particularly good for watching current seasons of shows as they air. A VPN (virtual private network)?may seem like an ultra geeky gift, but it's something not everyone knows they need, and nobody wants to pay for. Extra Dropbox space
Dropbox is one of our all-time favorite Web services, and while you can grab a lot of space for free, sometimes you just need to pony up for a premium subscription. A subscription to expanded space can be great for students, video editors with large files, or people that just want to sync their large musicor photo libraries across computers. Alternatively, you can also grab someone one of the cheaper options, like Google Drive, Skydrive, or Box.

A special thanks goes out to everyone who provided suggestions last week! It made putting together these guides a lot easier, and a better fit for you.

    The White Noise of Smell

White noise is actually not perceptually neutral noise. It's mathematically random noise, with a flat power spectrum, meaning that for example the sound energy between 25-75 Hz is the same as that between 15000-15050 Hz. But because the human ear's perceptual loudness curve is not flat, the perceptual frequency distribution of white noise is not actually flat. To produce perceptually neutral noise, you need to apply the inverse of the human ear's perceptual loudness curve to white noise, which results in grey noise [wikipedia.org].

But beyond that, it seems they actually mean something different, more like "perceived as indistinct background noise". That's a wider range of things, and has to do with being able to resolve specific, distracting components, not necessarily with mathematical definitions of noise.
